shows newlyweds Lawrence and Erma Fae
Jackson and Lawrence's sister, Myrtle Jackson,
leaning against Bill Mitchell's jitney in Kansas
City's Leeds neighborhood. Stemming from
segregation, Leeds was one of Kansas City's
all-black neighborhoods in the first half of the
twentieth century. Despite grappling with
inadequate housing, low incomes, and racism,
residents created a supportive and nurturing
environment.
