SHSMO congratulates Bill Eddleman, coordinator of the Cape Girardeau Research Center for producing and hosting the 50th episode of “Tales from Days Gone By,” airing on KRCU Public Radio and available for download on the station’s website. The series explores the rich history of Southeast Missouri including unique places, celebrated figures, and interesting stories of ordinary people.
Eddleman’s “golden” program, “A Spanish-American War Veteran’s Mysterious Death” airs today. In this episode, we learn about Walker Leslie, a young man who returns from service in the Spanish-American War in 1899. The former soldier begins working on a farm near Whitewater in Cape Girardeau County. However, in the late evening of the fall of 1900, Leslie was struck by a train. Was it an accident or something more sinister?
