INTRODUCTION

The Zumwalt family papers consist of genealogical materials, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, local church histories, and miscellaneous articles relating to a family that settled in Boone and Callaway Counties around 1800.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Zumwalt family papers were donated the State Historical Society of Missouri by Marjorie Ve Zumwalt Dawson through Esther Hepple on March 31, 1997 (Accession No. 3152).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Marjorie Ve Zumwalt was born November 6, 1918, in Boone County, Missouri. She was the only child of Felix Andrew and Cora May Forbis Zumwalt. She was raised in Boone County and married John Wilson Dawson on August 21, 1942.

Marjorie Zumwalt Dawson traced the Zumwalt family back to Andrew Zumwalt, who immigrated from Germany in 1737. Zumwalt was married twice and had 11 children. He and his family lived in York County, Pennsylvania, and then Frederick County, Virginia, where Andrew is buried. Christopher Zumwalt, the oldest son of Andrew and his second wife, Ann Regina, moved with his family to Kentucky and then Callaway County, Missouri in the 1790s.

The Forbis family is traced to George Forbis, Sr. of Fayette County, Kentucky, in the 1700s. George and his wife, Mary, brought their family to Boone County, Missouri, around 1837. They were members of the New Liberty Baptist Church in Ashland.

Marjorie Z. Dawson collected family photographs, kept photo albums, and a newspaper scrapbook of the history, events, churches, people, and places that were relevant to Boone County. Marjorie’s husband, John, worked at the State Sanatorium in Mount Vernon, Missouri, around 1955. They also lived in Kansas in the early 1960s. In April 1964, John W. Dawson passed away. Marjorie Z. Dawson died in 1989. Both are buried at the New Salem Cemetery in southern Boone County.
