He lived in Bentonsville, Warren County, VA, but for a short time during 1859 and 1860 lived in Brunswick, Missouri. After 1865, he lived in Strasburg, Shenandoah County, VA, with his wife Roberta Finnell. They had eight children. His stepbrother, Philip A. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Spengler Family Papers consist primarily of letters sent to Daniel H. Spengler, by his brothers Philip A. and Samuel F. Spengler.

The correspondence includes letters sent to Spengler, then living in Warren County, Virginia, during the period 1856 to 1860 and 1865 to 1870. They were mostly written by his brother Philip, who lived in Saline County, Missouri, but also by another brother, Samuel, and sister, Sarah. A few letters from other relatives and friends are also included. In a letter dated 24 July 1859, there is a mention of a series of lynchings of African-Americans in Missouri. And in a letter dated July 1, 1866, the conflict in the Missouri State Assembly between General Frank P. Blair and Governor Thomas C. Fletcher over the question of Reconstruction and the presence of a standing army in Missouri is discussed. Agricultural matters and horse breeding are also discussed in the correspondence. The letters are arranged in chronological order, and most of them have envelopes.

The miscellaneous folder contains various personal papers of Daniel H. Spengler. They include a map of New York City, a photocopy of the Warren County, Virginia census of 1850, a North Missouri Railroad advertisement, two train tickets, and three receipts of travel expenses and other transactions.
