DONOR INFORMATION

The Ardath Cary Young Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Dennis and Bonnie Young on June 6, 2006 (Accession No. 6125).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Ardath Anita Cary was born on November 25, 1923 in Edina, Missouri, to De Forrest Witt Cary and Clavia McMillen Cary. She graduated from Edina High School in 1942 and attended the University of Missouri in Columbia from 1942 to 1943, majoring in home economics. There she met Willard T. Young, a MoMM2c (Motor Machinist Mate Second Class) who was in the University’s Navy Diesel Training Program.

Willard T. Young was born on March 1, 1925 in Flint, Michigan to Claude T. Young and Mary I. Gowin Young. He graduated from the Navy Diesel Training Program in November 1942. Willard and Ardath were married on October 9, 1945 in Boston, Massachusetts. They had two sons, Dennis and Thomas, and two daughters, Jennifer and Arden. They were divorced in 1974 and Ardath lived and worked in Ypsilanti, Michigan. In 2006, she moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin. Willard T. Young died in Florida on March 31, 2006.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The family papers consist of Ardath Cary’s diplomas from elementary school and high school. Also included are a marriage booklet for Ardath and Willard T. Young, a birth certificate request for Dennis Young, obituaries, genealogical information for the McMillen family, and funeral books for Clavia McMillen Cary and De Witt Forrest Cary.

Ardath Cary collected postcards throughout her life. Postcards included in the collection contain images of Missouri and as well as correspondence from relatives and friends. Of particular interest is a packet of postcards featuring images of Columbia, Missouri, from the 1940s.

The photographs make up the majority of the collection and contain images of the McMillen, Cary, and Young families. Of particular interest is the photograph album kept by Ardath during her time as a student at the University of Missouri and while employed at the S.H. Kress & Co. store in downtown Columbia. These photographs offer a look at the clothing trends of the 1930s and 1940s for women, men, and children.
