INTRODUCTION
The papers of Jean Carnahan, U.S. Senator from the state of Missouri from 2001 to 2002, consist of legislative memos, journals, briefings, guest books, miscellaneous senatorial correspondence, photographs, and video cassettes.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Jean Carnahan Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Jean Carnahan on January 10, 2006 (Accession No. 6101). An addition was made on January 20, 2006.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Jean Anne Carpenter was born December 20, 1933 in Washington, D.C. She married Melvin Carnahan on June 12, 1954 and graduated from George Washington University with a B.A. in Business and Public Administration in 1955. In 1993, she became First Lady of Missouri when her husband took office as Governor.
Carnahan was appointed U.S. Senator on January 3, 2001, to fill her husband’s seat, which was won posthumously. She remained in office until November 25, 2002, when she unsuccessfully ran for re-election for the remainder of the term. As a U.S. Senator, she became an advocate for health care and welfare of children. In 2004, Carnahan wrote her memoirs, Don’t Let the Fire Go Out!
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Jean Carnahan Papers consist of senatorial correspondence, memos, briefing and hearing papers, publicity clippings, photographs, video cassettes, an interview transcript, speeches, and guest books from the two years she held office in the Senate. The papers are arranged into five series according to the donor’s original order:
FOLDER LIST
The Senatorial Correspondence series consists of letters on legislative issues, policy development, appropriations, and committees. The subjects covered in the correspondence consist of health care and prescription drugs, children’s issues, military funding, immigrant benefits, and governmental affairs including provider taxes and election reform. Three guest books from her office are included in the series, as well as letters to the President and his cabinet.
