BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Harold Henderson Leake was born on December 27, 1891, in Racine, Missouri to John Wesley and Lottie Henderson Leake. Harold spent most of his childhood in Aurora, Missouri and then attended Drury College in Springfield, Missouri. While attending Drury College, Harold met Dorothy Van Dyke, a fellow student, and they began corresponding with each other after he left school. During World War I, Harold was an officer in the field artillery and was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri and Camp Taylor, West Point, Kentucky. Harold and Dorothy Leake were married on June 13, 1919. He had been a piano and voice student and began teaching piano under the supervision of his teacher, Professor William L. Calhoun (the Calhoun School of Music), after his return from the war. He also established the H.H. Leake School of Music. In 1927, Harold became the head of the music department at Monett Junior College, Monett, Missouri.

In 1935, he entered the University of Oklahoma and earned a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. While attending school, he became interested in educational radio. From 1935 to 1942, Harold worked for WNAD, OU's radio station, and became its program manager. During World War II, Harold took a leave of absence from the radio station and worked various war-related jobs, including teaching operational procedures to ground crews at the Army Air Forces Technical Training Detachment, Tishomingo, Oklahoma. He also taught training classes of WAVES at Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, Stillwater, Oklahoma. After the war ended, he returned to radio and became the Director of Radio Services at WKY radio station at Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, from 1945 to 1951.

In 1951, Harold went to Crane Creek, Stone County, Missouri, and built the Leakes' home, "The Windows." From 1952 to 1954, Harold broadcast a radio show, "Between the Windows," that aired daily on Springfield's KWTO. After the show was cancelled, he tried to keep it running himself; however, he was unable to and decided to retire. In 1956, Harold decided to become an Episcopal priest and was ordained in 1957. He served at churches in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas. Harold Henderson Leake died of a heart attack on February 13, 1978.

Dorothy Lois Van Dyke was born on September 6, 1893, in Columbus Junction, Iowa to lawyer, Benjamin Franklin, and Fannie Fern Fulton Van Dyke. When Dorothy turned seven, the family moved to Granite, Oklahoma. Dorothy's mother died in 1903 and the following year, B.F. Van Dyke married Nancy (Hattie) Esther Wright. From 1910 to 1915, Dorothy attended Drury College where she earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biology. From 1915 to 1916, she taught at Ozark High School, Ozark, Missouri. She then returned to Granite, Oklahoma and taught there. From 1918 to 1919, Dorothy was chair of the biology department at Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma. After their marriage, Harold and Dorothy moved to Crane Creek in Stone County, Missouri, and their daughter, Claire Marcelotte Leake, was born on March 22, 1920. Their son, John Benjamin Leake, was born on February 10, 1923. By the end of the 1920s, the Leake family moved to Monett. From 1927 through 1933, Dorothy taught biology at Monett Junior College and was head of the science department.

From 1935 to 1936, Dorothy taught in the biology department at Southeastern State Teachers College, Durant, Oklahoma. In 1937, she went to the University of Oklahoma and taught biology courses while working on her PhD, which she received in 1944. During 1944 and 1945, Dorothy taught biology courses at Central Missouri State Teachers College and Jefferson City Junior College. She then returned to the University of Oklahoma to teach for a year until September 1947, when she became an associate professor at Oklahoma Agricultural & Mechanical College. In June 1948, she returned to Southeastern State Teachers College and served as the head of the biology department until her retirement in 1959.

After retirement, Harold and Dorothy returned to Crane Creek and their home, "The Windows." Dorothy worked on several books, including illustrating Handbook of Rocky Mountain Plants, written by Ruth Nelson, published in 1969. Harold and Dorothy authored several manuscripts together and published Wildflowers of the Ozarks in 1981. From 1988 to 1990, Dorothy wrote a newspaper column, "The Windows," for the Marionville News Press in Lawrence County, Missouri. She became involved in the conservation movement and opened up her land at Crane Creek to researchers and school groups interested in ecology. Dorothy V. Leake died on July 23, 1990. In 1993, Dorothy's book, Desert and Mountain Plants of the Southwest, coauthored by Ben and Marcelotte Leake, was published.

In 1982, Dorothy received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Drury College. Dorothy received the Ellen Swallow Richards Award in 1985. In 1989, Drury College honored Dorothy with an honorary doctorate. Another collection of Harold Leake's papers can be found at the Oklahoma State University's Special Collections and University Archives (Harold H. Leake Collection, 1918-1951, Collection No. 94- 063).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Leake Family series consists of correspondence, photographs, travel diaries, and miscellaneous documents belonging to members of the Leake family, excepting Harold and Dorothy Leake. The series is arranged by type of material.

The Harold H. Leake series consists of the personal and professional papers of Harold H. Leake. The personal papers include diaries, school papers, recital programs, clippings, military records, and miscellaneous documents. The personal papers are arranged by type of material and chronologically therein. The professional papers include materials from Harold's varied professional life, which included teaching music, working in radio, publishing, and his work as a cleric. The series is arranged by profession and then by type of material.

The Dorothy V. Leake series consists of the personal and professional papers of Dorothy V. Leake. The personal papers include diaries, school papers, and miscellaneous documents. The professional papers consist primarily of Dorothy's research and teaching materials. Also included are publications, materials on Crane Creek, subject files, and recipes.

The Miscellaneous series consists of a diary, newsletters, photographs, publications, and newspaper clippings. The series is arranged by type of material and chronologically therein.

The Photographs series consists of photographs from the Leake family and also includes photographs of the Hall, Van Dyke, Fulton, and Henderson families, as well as friends of the Leake family. There are also photographs of "The Windows," Crane Creek, and Granite, Oklahoma. The photographs date from the 1870s to the 1980s.

Leake Family Series

The Leake Family series consists of correspondence, photographs, travel diaries, and miscellaneous documents belonging to members of the Leake family. The series is arranged by type of material.

The correspondence by Harold, Dorothy, Marcelotte, and Ben Leake is separated and placed at the beginning of the correspondence. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent and chronologically therein. The correspondence is significant because it spans the entire 20th century and details the events and lives of Harold and Dorothy, as well as the lives of their large family and group of friends. The correspondence between Harold and Dorothy is plentiful because throughout most of their professional careers, they lived in different houses, sometimes in different states. They often wrote each other several times a day, keeping each other updated on the family.

Several of the letters between Harold and Marcelotte are written in the Shauvian alphabet, which was based on George Bernard Shaw's phonetic alphabet. For a key of the Shauvian alphabet, see the end of the inventory.

Of particular interest are the letters from Henrietta Leake from 1918 to 1922, in which she describes her time as a student at the University of Missouri. She describes sports, social activities, professors, her housing, and other topics related to college life.

The 1918 influenza epidemic is discussed throughout the correspondence of that time period. There is specific mention of the epidemic in Springfield and Aurora, Missouri, and Enid, Oklahoma.

The photographs consist primarily of the immediate Leake family, including Harold, Dorothy, Marcelotte Leake Roeder and her family, and Ben Leake and his family. There are also several photographs of Claire and Hollis Arnett, and Van and Alexandra Arnett. Also included are landscape photographs, including several of "The Windows," the Leake's home at Crane Creek.

The travel section consists of diaries, receipts, brochures, scrapbooks, photographs, and other miscellaneous documents from Harold and Dorothy's travels. The majority of the travel materials pertain to Dorothy and Harold's two trips to England where they participated in a preacher exchange program.

Also included are miscellaneous papers of other Leake family members, including Harold's parents, John W. Leake and Lottie Leake; Marcelotte Leake; Ben Leake; and Bonnie Bourne, Ben's wife.

Harold H. Leake Series

The Harold H. Leake series consists of materials pertaining to Harold Leake's personal and professional life. The personal papers include Harold's diaries, school papers, recital programs, clippings, World War I military records, and miscellaneous documents. The papers are arranged by type of material and chronologically therein.

Harold kept diaries for most of his life and they contain records of his daily activities, stories, notes on projects, and weather reports. Of particular interest is Harold's 1933 diary which he kept while he was taking care of his dying father. Many of the diaries from 1957 forward are liturgical diaries and contain notes and scheduled meetings pertaining to his clerical work.

The school materials include coursebooks and schoolwork from Harold's elementary and high school years. Also included are lecture notes from classes he took while attending Drury College and the University of Oklahoma. The Drury College materials include student handbooks from 1909 through 1912. There are also papers and correspondence pertaining to a University of Missouri English correspondence course Harold took in 1934 and 1935.

Throughout his life, Harold practiced voice and piano. Included in these materials are newspaper clippings and recital programs pertaining to Harold's performances. There are also music logs and promotional materials from the Calhoun School of Music.

The personal papers also include several miscellaneous items, including notes and notebooks where Harold recorded random thoughts and ideas. Also included are programs from performances and plays he attended. Of particular interest is a colored map of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair obtained when he visited the fair on a school trip.

The professional papers include materials from Harold's varied professional life, which included teaching music, working in radio, publishing, and clerical work. The series is arranged by profession and then by type of material.

After World War I, Harold moved to Aurora and began giving music lessons for the Calhoun School of Music. He later branched out and established the H.H. Leake School of Music. Included are recital programs and newspaper clippings pertaining to his music students, some of whom went on to have professional music or teaching careers.

In 1927, Harold became the first music director at Monett Junior College and helped develop the music program at the school. Included are materials regarding the establishment of the music program, correspondence concerning curriculum, clippings and materials about the Junior College and the music department. Of particular interest are the newspaper clippings from a column entitled, "Junior College Notes," which ran in the local newspaper detailing what was happening at the school.

While attending the University of Oklahoma, Harold became interested in the field of educational radio broadcasting. He began working at WNAD, the school's radio station, and went on to become the program manager. He broadcasted under the name Henderson Leake, because he felt that it sounded better than Harold Leake. Included are the radio scripts for many of WNAD's radio programs that Harold wrote, produced, and broadcast. The WNAD materials also include information on the radio station and its history, correspondence between Harold and school and radio employees, materials for radio workshops, and other miscellaneous material.

Harold took a leave of absence from the university during World War II and resigned from WNAD in 1945 when he began working as the Director of Radio Services for WKY at Oklahoma A&M. While director, he hosted several radio programs and traveled to area county fairs for remote broadcasts. WKY's most popular radio program was the "Oklahoma Farm Almanac," which aired daily and ran from 1946 to 1950. Harold used the material from the program to write Oklahoma Almanac in 1947. Included are the scripts used for "Oklahoma Farm Almanac," which are arranged by date. Please note that there are a few dates missing. There are also seven audio discs of the "Oklahoma Farm Almanac" program. Also included are correspondence, photographs, clippings, Oklahoma A&M student phonebooks, and other materials related to Harold's employment at the college.

Scripts for the radio program, "Between the Windows," as well as listener correspondence, and Harold's notes containing ideas for the program are included in this series.

The subject files consist of newspaper clippings, articles, and notes collected by Harold for various projects, including radio material. The files are arranged topically.

Harold became an ordained Episcopalian priest in 1957 and served at churches in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The clerical materials include a sermon card file, which contain notes for sermons and sermon ideas. Also included are a number of his sermons arranged by topic. Materials from churches Harold served at include directories, correspondence, and church bulletins. These items are arranged by topic and chronologically therein. Also included are study materials and Harold's answers for the diaconate exam taken in 1955. Materials from Harold's ordination include photographs, clippings, programs, and congratulatory correspondence. The clerical materials also include pastoral correspondence between Harold and his parishioners. Subject files for counseling materials are arranged by topic.

Another area of interest for Harold was in publishing. During the 1940s and 1950s, he wrote book reviews and submitted them to newspapers for publication. Copies of his book reviews and the correspondence with the newspaper editors are included.

Harold also wrote short stories and several non-fiction manuscripts, which consisted primarily of music textbooks. Two of his books, Wildflowers of the Ozarks and Orchestral Music for Everybody, were published posthumously in 1981 and 1986, respectively. Please note that Wildflowers of the Ozarks was coauthored with Dorothy and the manuscript is included in her professional papers. He edited, published, and coauthored With Five Reservations with Dell O'Hara and the book was published in 1986.

Throughout his professional career, Harold worked at a wide variety of jobs apart from teaching music, radio, and the ministry. Included are materials from Harold's other jobs, which included writing and directing the Stone County Centennial Pageant and working for several war- related agencies. In 1942, he was a consumer representative for the Office of Price Administration. In 1943, he trained soldiers at the Army Air Forces Technical Training Detachment in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. From 1943 to 1945, he taught classes of WAVES on the Oklahoma A&M campus in Stillwater. Of particular interest is a WAVES songbook and photographs of the WAVES training on the A&M campus. There are also several issues of Brightworks, a newsletter published by the WAVES stationed in Stillwater. These materials offer an insightful look at WAVES training and their social lives while in Oklahoma.

Dorothy V. Leake Series

The Dorothy V. Leake series consists of the personal and professional papers of Dorothy V. Leake. The personal papers include diaries, school papers, and miscellaneous documents. The personal papers are arranged by type of material and chronologically therein.

The diaries begin in 1926 and continue regularly until 1986. The early diaries contain appointments, notes about classes, and short entries about daily activities. Dorothy's diary entries changed after the death of Harold on February 11, 1978. Instead of short entries consisting primarily of a synopsis of daily activities, the entries became letters to Harold telling about what she did that day, who she saw, and how she felt.

The school papers include materials from Dorothy's grade school, high school, and college years. While attending Drury College, Dorothy illustrated several covers of the Drury Mirror, the student newspaper, several of which are included here. Also included are her research notes for various projects and course notes from college courses. There are several drafts of her dissertation titled, The Algae of Crystal Lake, Cleveland County, Oklahoma.

The professional papers consist primarily of Dorothy's research and teaching materials. Also included are publications, Crane Creek material, subject files, and recipes. The papers are arranged by profession and then by type of material.

After receiving her doctorate, Dorothy began teaching biology and would teach throughout her professional career until her retirement in several schools in Missouri and Oklahoma. The majority of this series pertains to Dorothy's teaching career and materials include course notes, exams, lab materials, and notes. The teaching materials are arranged by course subject. Also included are clippings and correspondence related to her various teaching positions.

Throughout her career, Dorothy wrote and illustrated several books on plants and flowers. She illustrated the Handbook of Rocky Mountain Plants, written by Ruth Nelson, which was published in 1969. She and Harold authored several manuscripts together and Wildflowers of the Ozarks was published in 1981. In 1993, Dorothy's book, Desert and Mountain Plants of the Southwest, coauthored by Ben and Marcelotte Leake, was published posthumously. She also wrote a weekly newspaper column, "The Windows," for the Marionville News Press in Lawrence County, Missouri from 1988 to 1990.

Miscellaneous Series

The Miscellaneous series consists of a diary, newsletters, photographs, publications, and newspaper clippings. The series is arranged by type of material and chronologically therein. Included is a diary of Margaret Harrison, although her relationship to the Leakes is not known. According to the diary, Margaret was from Monett and was a junior at Monett High School. The 1910-1911 diary contains entries describing her daily life, including school, friends, and her teachers.

There are letters and newspaper articles written by and about Glen Ward Dresbach and Beverly Githens, poets from Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Also included is poetry by D.C. Pratt, a childhood friend of Harold Leake's and the manuscript for The Five Tribes of Oklahoma by Angie Debo. Margaret Newberry Sloane, "Bee Martin", was a lifelong friend of the Leakes. Included are issues of Players Magazine and Pasadena Playhouse News from Newberry's time spent in Los Angeles pursuing acting and working at a talent agency.
