INTRODUCTION

This collection consists of papers of the Bryan and Phillips families of New Madrid, Missouri. The papers include various wills, deeds, accounts, genealogy, miscellaneous material, and photographs.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Phillips Family Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Mary E. Phillips on January 23, 1987 (Accession No. 3108).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

The Bryan family lived in New Madrid, Missouri in the early 1800s. Eliza Bryan was witness to the New Madrid Earthquake in 1811-1812. Her granddaughter, Mary Eliza Bryan married Richard M. Phillips, Sr. in 1851 and they had three children, Frederick, Richard, Jr., and Laura. Richard, Sr. died in 1871 and Mary married James H. Howard. She later moved to Portland, Oregon.

Laura married Richard Nall and moved to Mena, Arkansas.

Frederick Phillips was born in 1855 in New Madrid, Missouri. He studied law at the University of Michigan and in 1877, became a judge in Belleville, Illinois. In 1888, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. While serving as Fire Chief for Belleville, Phillips died on December 9, 1905.

Richard M. Phillips, Jr. was born in 1870 and attended Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, Missouri. He became the City Clerk of Sikeston, Missouri in 1894. Two years later he helped found the Citizens Banks of Sikeston. He moved to Portland, Oregon in the early 1900s. In 1933, he returned to Missouri to become Assistant Director of the Penal Institution of Missouri.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Phillips Family Papers consist of deeds, wills, accounts, genealogy, photographs, and miscellaneous material. The papers primarily center around Mary Howard and her two sons, Frederick and Richard Phillips, Jr. The papers are arranged by name of individual and then topically.

The collection includes Eliza Bryan’s will in which she passes on her slaves to various family members, and a newspaper reprint of a letter she wrote describing the New Madrid Earthquake. Other documents include Mary Howard’s reminiscences of a tornado that ripped through Cape Girardeau in 1850 while she was a student at St. Vincent’s Academy and genealogical information on the Bryan and Phillips families.

The collection also contains numerous photographs of the Phillips family in New Madrid and Sikeston.
