INTRODUCTION
The papers of Colonel Eugene W. Tucker, staff member and later executive officer of Kemper Military School. The papers include lecture material, articles, speeches, correspondence, school catalogs, financial reports, and miscellaneous items.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Eugene W. Tucker Papers were transferred from the State Historical Society of Missouri to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection on April 13, 1999 (Accession No. 5878). The original donor is unknown.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Eugene W. Tucker (generally referred to as E.W. or "Tuck") was born in Francesville, Indiana, on February 28, 1899. On August 6, 1924, he married Pauline A. LeMaster. Tucker received his A.B. degree from Lake Forest College in 1921, his A.M. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1924, and doctor of education degree from the University of Missouri in 1935.
After serving in the Army in World War I, he joined the staff of Kemper Military School in 1921, as a teacher of history, social studies, and debate. In 1928, he was named executive officer, vice-president, and treasurer of the school. He also served as director of public relations and publications, director of alumni activities, and supervisor of the school's social and extra-curricular program. Tucker also served as a member and secretary of the Kemper Board of Directors and president and secretary of the Independent Schools Association of the Central Military Colleges and Schools of the United States.
He was the first governor of the Missouri-Arkansas district of the Kiwanis Club, a charter member and president of the Boonville, Missouri, Kiwanis Club, edited the district magazine, The Kiwanigram, and served on numerous district and international committees. He was a board member and president of the Boonville Chamber of Commerce, a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner, commander of a local American Legion Post, vice-president of the Boonville National Bank, and was co-owner of the Stephens Motel in Columbia, Missouri. Tucker died on December 13, 1985.

The Articles and Speeches series consists of transcripts of lectures given at faculty conferences, articles dealing with education and schools, plus quotes and anecdotal material clipped from various newspapers and magazines.

The Reports series consists of surveys which were created to study the distribution of the cadet population, the home and school environment, the occupation of parents, rating scales for judging teachers in service, a survey of graduates in the service, and school financial reports. Also included are assorted procedural manuals for Kemper Military School administration, reports of proceedings from meetings of the Association of Military Schools and Colleges, and the by-laws of Kemper School.

The School Materials series consists of Kemper newsletters, handwritten notes, brochures, catalogs, and pamphlets dating from the 1940s to 1970s. Other materials include Christmas cards and greetings among several military schools and colleges and assorted clippings focusing on the subject of education. The papers provide a detailed view of the financial, educational and philosophical challenges facing the private school system.

The Miscellaneous series consists of Kiwanis Club material, Tucker's notary public commission certificates and correspondence, assorted notes, holiday greetings, appointment calendars, photographs, and a scrapbook kept by Pauline Tucker. Also of note are subscription solicitations from The Negro Worker magazine from the 1940s.
