BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Casper H. Bode, Jr. was born on 15 March 1814 in Schedehausen, Germany to Casper H. Bode, Sr. and Anna Elisa Hackmann Bode. The younger Bode immigrated to America with his uncle’s family in 1833. He worked for a time digging the Erie Canal and laying tracks for the Missouri Pacific Railway before settling in Bremen, Ohio, in 1839 and becoming a teacher. Shortly thereafter, he began preparing for the ministry and moved to Femme Osage, Missouri to assist Pastor Hermann Garlichs at what is considered the birthplace of the Evangelical Church in America. He was ordained in 1845 and succeeded Garlichs as pastor a year later.

In 1854, he married Elisabeth Kirsch (1825-1897) and they had five children: Elisabeth (Elsa), Henrietta (Etta), Henry, Theophilus, and Johann Gottfried. The girls both became teachers in parochial schools. The three boys all became ministers in the church. Casper Bode retired to Belleville, Illinois in 1889 and died on 11 March 1892.

His eldest son, Henry, was born on 7 June 1862. He was ordained in 1885 and served the congregations of St. John’s in Mehlville, Missouri, and Immanuel in East St. Louis, Illinois. He was active in Home Missions work and in 1909 was elected treasurer of the Evangelical Synod in North America, based in St. Louis, a post he held for 20 years. In 1889, he married Clara Will, who died in 1894. In 1902, he married Johanna Faust. Shortly after her death in 1921, he married her sister, Emilie (Mimi). She died in 1955. Henry died on 27 April 1940.

Theophilus was born on 3 March 1864 and ordained in 1886. He served as pastor of St. Peter’s Church in Buffalo, New York for 25 years. He and his wife, Louise Fausel Bode, had one son, Armin. Theophilus died on 10 September 1928. Gottfried was born on 10 February 1866 and ordained in 1897. He was a pastor at the Evangelical Church in Fulton, Missouri; Immanuel Church in St. Louis; and Friedens Church in Plymouth, Nebraska. He also served as secretary to the Board of Directors at Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, president of the Nebraska District, and Board of Home Missions in Nebraska. He married Emilie Hoefer in 1901 and they had five children: Adele, Clara, Erwin, Paul, and Helen. Gottfried died on 19 July 1938 and Emilie died on 24 December 1963.

Adele was born on 23 August 1902. She was a graduate of Moody Bible College and worked at the Home Missions Board of the Evangelical Synod in St. Louis. After her retirement, she became one of the secretaries at St. Paul’s Church in St. Louis where her brothers were pastors. She died on 9 January 1991.

Clara was born on 23 July 1903. She taught in rural schools before marrying Reverend John G. Ruhl in 1928. They settled in Marthasville, Missouri, where Ruhl ran the Emmaus Home for the church. They had five daughters: Wilma, Alice, Irene, Grace, and Joanne. John died on 13 July 1986 and Clara died on 19 August 1998.

Erwin was born on 23 May 1906. He was ordained in 1929 and served the congregations of St. John’s in Madeline Island, Wisconsin; Faith Evangelical Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota; and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in St. Louis. He also served on the boards of Deaconess Hospital and Good Samaritan Home and was involved in ecumenical work in St. Louis. He married Ella Bockholdt in 1930 and they had one son, Erwin, Jr., on 8 October 1935. Ella died on 24 April 1989 and Erwin Sr. died on 10 November 1996.

Erwin, Jr. married Joanne Grollmus in 1958 and was ordained two years later. After serving several parishes and in campus ministry around the country, they settled in Massachusetts in 1986 when Erwin was elected Associate Conference Minister of the UCC Conference of Massachusetts. He also served on the Eden Seminary Board for 15 years, including three years as chair. The couple had three children: Karen, Eric, and Michael.

Paul was born on 14 January 1909 and was ordained in 1936. He began his ministry at Immanuel Church in Newton, Kansas, then succeeded his father at Friedens Church in Plymouth, Nebraska, upon the elder Bode’s death in 1938. He later taught music at Eden Seminary in Webster Groves, served as associate pastor of Trinity Church in St. Louis in charge of music and religious education, and as Director of the Weekday Religious Education program of the St. Louis Metropolitan Church Federation. He joined his brother, Erwin, at St. Paul’s in 1954. The brothers retired from St. Paul’s in 1983. Paul died on 10 August 1989.

Helen followed a similar path to her sister, Clara. She was born on 16 May 1910 and taught school for a short time. She married Reverend William H. Ruhl, brother of John, in 1936. They worked in several parishes throughout the country before settling in Blue Springs, Missouri where Bill became superintendent of a retirement center. They had two children, David and Marian. Helen died on 10 November 1985 and Bill died on 24 September 1989.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Bode family papers contain the personal and professional papers of four generations of ministers in the Evangelical Church, now the United Church of Christ. For more information on the transformation of the Evangelical Church to the Evangelical and Reformed Church and later, the United Church of Christ, please consult the website, http://www.ucc.org/about-us/. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, ministerial papers, publications, and publicity clippings and is divided into six series: Bode Family, Erwin H. and Ella Bode, Erwin R. and Joanne Bode, Related Families, Evangelical and Reformed Church, and Publications.

The Bode Family series consists of correspondence, photographs, ministerial papers, sermons, and miscellaneous materials of three generations of the Bode family. The series is arranged chronologically and then alphabetically by type of material. Because the papers of Erwin Bode and his son make up the bulk of the collection, they have been put into separate series.

The series includes lists of young people confirmed by Casper Bode, the sermons of Casper, Henry, and Gottfried, and a history of the Femme Osage settlement, written by Henry Bode, describing the development of the Evangelical Church and Casper Bode’s life and work in the church.

Also included in this series are the transcribed letters of Gottfried and Emilie Bode written during their courtship in 1900 and 1901, genealogical information, a bounty of family photographs, and round robin correspondence written between the third generation of Bode brothers and sisters which they termed the “Brosistle.” Much of the early correspondence and sermons in this series are written in German.

Paul Bode kept photograph scrapbooks depicting personal and family events. However, only a few scrapbook pages remained and there was no coherent order to them. These pages have been photocopied and disassembled for preservation purposes.

The Erwin H. and Ella Bode series is comprised of correspondence, including many Brosistles, photographs, publicity clippings, and ministerial papers of Erwin and Ella Bode. The series is divided into the Bode’s personal and professional papers and chronologically therein. The personal materials in this series include diaries, school yearbooks and report cards, and a memoir. Some of the correspondence from Erwin’s mother in the 1920s and 1930s is written in German. A significant portion of the photographs document the Bodes’ early years in the ministry at La Pointe, Madeline Island, Wisconsin, in the 1930s.

The series also contains an almost complete set of annual and monthly pastor’s reports from Bode’s long career with only a seven year gap from 1945 to 1951. Also included are photographs of confirmation classes and church events, sermons, and publicity clippings.

The Erwin R. and Joanne Bode series contains correspondence, photographs, pastor’s reports, writings, and newsletters documenting the Bodes’ work at St. Martin’s United Church of Christ in Dittmer, Missouri; as the leader of campus ministries in Michigan and Indiana; and in the church conference in Massachusetts. A memoir written by Joanne Bode is also included in the series, as are audio tapes of the Bodes’ wedding and Erwin Bode’s ordination.

The series is arranged chronologically, except for the personal materials located at the end of the series, which are arranged alphabetically and chronologically therein.

The Related Families series contains photographs, correspondence, and family histories of the Hoefer and Bockholdt families. An audio cassette of a worship service conducted at a Hoefer family reunion in 1985 is also included. The Hoefers of Higginsville, Missouri were Emilie (Gottfried’s wife) Bode’s family and the Bockholdts of Plymouth, Nebraska, were Ella Bode’s family. The series is arranged alphabetically by type of material for each family and chronologically therein.

The Evangelical and Reformed Church series is comprised of Synod publications and miscellaneous materials documenting the history and mission of the church and is arranged alphabetically with the publications listed chronologically. Included are anniversary publications and photographs of Eden Seminary and Elmhurst College, hymnals, and pamphlets discussing the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church with the Congregational Church to form the United Church of Christ in 1957.

The bulk of the Publications series appears to be Casper Bode’s library of theological works including the catechism and pastor’s manuals dating from 1754, which were handed down to later generations of Bodes. Some of the secular works include a primer/alphabet book, dictionary, and world history. Most are written in German. The series is arranged chronologically.
