ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH
The Linguistic Society of America was founded in 1924 by several linguistic scholars including Leonard Bloomfield, George M. Bolling, and Edgar H. Sturtevant in order to provide a forum for the discussion of linguistics. Shortly after the society began publication of its main organ, Language.
In 1928 Sturtevant organized the Linguistic Institute, which was held at various universities around the country. They are currently held every other summer. The institutes provide the opportunity to take courses in the field offered by prominent linguists. In 1932 it went on hiatus due to the Great Depression but came back in 1936, and during World War II, the institute and the society helped carry out the language training programs for the government.
In 1969 the society went through a major organizational change with the retirement of longtime Secretary-Treasurer, Archibald A. Hill. The society expanded the responsibilities of the Secretary-Treasurer and established a Secretariat in Washington, D.C., to handle the new activities of the LSA which included providing a liaison between membership, the federal government, and other professional societies. The new office shared both building space and resources with the Center for Applied Linguistics, which acts as a clearinghouse and coordinator between the society, linguists, and federal and international agencies. The relationship was dissolved in 1985 when the society felt it no longer needed to share in the resources of CAL.
The Society met biannually until 1982 when it cancelled its summer meeting, held in conjunction with the Linguistic Institute. The annual meeting is held in the winter. At these meetings the business of the LSA is conducted, papers are presented, and panel discussions are held regarding the discipline of linguistics.
The society is affiliated with, and an active member of, numerous organizations including the American Council of Learned Societies, the Consortium of Social Science Associations, the National Science Foundation, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Comité International Permanent des Linguistes, and the Center for Applied Linguistics.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Linguistic Society of America Records include committee minutes, correspondence of officers and administrators, publications, grant applications, correspondence with affiliated organizations, and planning documents on Linguistic Institutes and annual meetings. These records are arranged into 88 series. Each series is labeled with a letter of the alphabet, except for the audio/visual and microfilm series. A series list follows this scope and content note.
Series A-SSS consist of the committee files. The committees are arranged alphabetically and the records within each series are then arranged chronologically. Highlights of these series include the Executive Committee series (P), which contain meeting minutes and agendas from the annual and summer meetings; series S, the Fund for the Future of Linguistics, which documents the efforts of the LSA to receive long-term funding for Linguistic Institutes; and series QQ, Committee on the Manpower Survey, which sought statistical and anecdotal information on women in the field of linguistics during the 1970s.
Series ZZ, the Program Committee, documents the process of choosing sites and papers for the annual and summer meetings. This series also includes the published programs for many, but not all, of the meetings. Series GGG, the Resolutions Committee, contains voting results on various resolutions put forth by the committee to the membership. These resolutions pertain to society business such as amendments to the constitution, as well as social issues, including the Vietnam War, aid to Nicaragua, the English-Only Movement, and Ebonics. Much discussion is made of whether or not the society should even be considering resolutions on social issues.
The Committee on the Revision of the Constitution (series HHH) contains drafts and correspondence relating to the revision of the constitution. This series is important in understanding the drastic changes which took place in the late 1960s when the society created the Washington, D.C., Secretariat Office.
Series TTT-XXX consist of LSA publications which are arranged alphabetically by publication title. Series TTT, Discontinued Publications, contains monographs, dissertations, and other publications put out by the society. The monographs and dissertations are also available on microfilm. Included in this series, but not supported by LSA, is the six volume set of Interlingua-English Dictionary, a work of Giuseppi Peano. Interlingua is a Latin-based international language Peano worked on for much of his professional life until his death in 1932. In addition to the dictionary, several primers and keys to Interlingua are included. Because of the new technology of radio, international languages were an important field of study in the early part of the twentieth century.
Series UUU contains issues of the Bulletin, which began publication in 1926 and is currently issued four times a year by the LSA. Series VVV consists of directories of linguistics programs in universities throughout the United States and Canada. Series WWW contains guides to fellowships for linguists. Finally series XXX contains issues of the LSA's main publication, Language, which is issued four times a year. Microfilm versions of issues of Language and the Bulletin are also available.
The Linguistic Institute series (YYY) contains planning information, host applications, and course listings for the institutes. Surveys were conducted in 1963 and 1964 to determine if the institutes were meeting the needs of the membership. These surveys and results are included in the series. This series is arranged chronologically by date of the Institute. The dates of the materials in each folder is listed in parenthesis.
The Affiliated Organizations series (ZZZ) contains correspondence with other organizations that have the same interests as the LSA. The LSA appoints delegates to many of these organizations including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Council of Learned Societies, the National Science Foundation, the Center for Applied Linguistics, and the Comité International Permanent des Linguistes. This series documents the efforts of these organizations, combined with the LSA, to promote linguistics and the sciences in general to other societies, governments, and the general public. This series is arranged alphabetically by organization name.
The Grants series (AAAA) contains correspondence and grant applications written by the LSA in the hopes of getting long-term funding for Linguistic Institutes and other educational programs in which the Society was involved. This series is arranged alphabetically by foundation name.
The Editor's Office series (BBBB) contains correspondence of the editor of Language and card files of article submissions accepted or rejected from 1939 through 1985. The President's Office series (CCCC) consists of correspondence of the president of the society. It is arranged chronologically. Discussion of the revision of the constitution is prominent in the first part of this series.
The Secretariat's Office series (DDDD) includes correspondence of the Secretariat and is arranged chronologically. Much of the correspondence relates to administrative matters and affiliated organizations.
The Secretary-Treasurer's Office series (EEEE) contains the correspondence of the Secretary-Treasurer and is arranged chronologically. This series includes correspondence from the society's first Secretary-Treasurer, Roland Kent and documents the growth of the society from the 1930s to the present. Revisions to the constitution, Linguistic Institutes, and increasing membership are some of the topics of discussion in this series.
The Edgar H. Sturtevant Correspondence series (FFFF) consists of the correspondence of the head of the Linguistic Institutes. This series is important in understanding the creation and growth of the institutes which now attract participants from around the world.
The Fanti/Peano Correspondence series (GGGG) contains the correspondence written by Guiseppi Peano, editor of Interlingua-English Dictionary and Aristede Fanti, who was employed by the U.S. Standards Bureau. Much, but not all, of the correspondence is written between Fanti and Peano and concerns Interlingua. After Peano's death, the bulk of Fanti's correspondence is with Roland Kent. Drafts of primers and keys of Interlingua are included. The correspondence is arranged into two groups-Fanti and Peano-and then chronologically within those two groups.
The Subject Files series (HHHH) includes information on various topics such as bilingualism, Esperanto, the history of the LSA, publicity clippings on members, the women's caucus, and planning documents on the Edward Sapir Centenary Conference. Other files in this series concern the LSA projects “Linguistics in the 70's” and “The Field of Linguistics.
The Publications (JJJJ) series consists of correspondence with the publishers of Language and the LSA Bulletin and other LSA publications. The correspondence concerns prices, copyright, and the problems surrounding the publication of the sixtieth anniversary volume on American linguistics by De Ridder Press. Information on the publishing of Language and a 1987 survey of Language readers are also included in this series.
The Audio/Visual series contains audio cassettes, audio tapes, and video tapes of meetings and symposia. Included on the audio cassettes are “Language and the Brain” tutorials and the business meetings and sessions from the 1976 and 1978 annual meetings. Also included are recordings of the 1981 Executive Committee meeting, the 1982 session on Women in Linguistics, and the Edward Sapir Lecture in 1984.
The audio tapes of two symposia were recorded at the 1970 annual meeting. The video tapes contain a Today Show segment with former Secretary-Treasurer Victoria Fromkin in 1984 and the Bloomfield Symposia from the 1987 annual meeting.
The Microfilm series contains copies of the Bulletin, Language, and LSA monographs and dissertations. These are also available in hard copy.
