ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

The National Federation of Press Women, Inc., (NFPW) first met on 6 May 1937. Helen Miller Malloch, who arranged the meeting between four women's press organizations, was elected president. Membership, which comprises members of state affiliates and members-at-large, has grown to almost 5,000 members.

The organization promotes journalism education through contests for high school students and professional journalists, as well as conducting workshops to improve the skills of journalists. They have taken an active role in advocating first amendment rights and women's rights by testifying before Congress and participating in organizations like the Student Press Law Center.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The NFPW, Inc., Records consist of the correspondence of officers, annual convention materials, histories of the organization, biographical information and oral histories of its members, publications, photographs, and affiliate information. The records are arranged into nine series:

The Offices series is divided into nine subseries, one for each of the main offices of the NFPW:

Each subseries contains correspondence and annual reports from each respective office. The subseries are arranged chronologically.

The Conventions and Meetings series contains publicity clippings and convention handbooks from the annual conventions and agendas, reports, and minutes from the board meetings. This series is arranged chronologically. The Programs series documents the contests, workshops, and other programs run or supported by the NFPW. It is divided into four subseries:

Included are lists of contest winners, contest descriptions, publicity clippings, and photographs of winners. This series helps to illustrate the NFPW's dedication to journalism education by means of their high school journalism contest, National Journalism Scholar's Academy, and On the Job With a Media Pro programs. This series is arranged chronologically within each subseries.

The Publications series is divided into five subseries for each publication of the NFPW. The first subseries consists of miscellaneous publications such as officers' manuals and is arranged alphabetically. The other publications are arranged chronologically within each subseries.

The Agenda contains news and notes on members, meetings, and legislative matters such as freedom of the press. It began publication in 1989 and generally is issued monthly.

The member directories run from 1945 to the present with the bulk coming from the 1990s. For most of the NFPW's history, the directories were published as an issue of Press Woman.

The Leader Letter is a monthly newsletter with notes on meetings and workshops. The issues run from 1953 to 1997 with the bulk running from the 1970s through 1990s.

Press Woman is the oldest and main organ of the NFPW. It started out in 1940 as the Bulletin but the title was quickly changed to Press Woman a year later. Press Woman issued a yearly member directory, usually in the summer. The publication covers member news, meetings, and issues facing female journalists such as equal pay, promotions, and appearance clauses for broadcasters. Press Woman is currently published bi-monthly. Issues from 1977 through 1988 are also available on microfilm.

NOTE: Each of these publications is missing one or more issues.

The Affiliates series provides histories and publicity clippings from each of the NFPW affiliate groups, including information on their founding and when they joined the NFPW. This series is arranged alphabetically. The Photographs series contains photographs from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Most of the photographs were taken at annual conventions and board meetings. Of special note are the group photographs of former presidents of the organization. They are arranged chronologically.

The History series contains some of the personal papers of founder, Helen Miller Malloch, and former president, Mattie M. Dykes. Photographs, correspondence, and newspaper clippings make up the bulk of these papers. Also included in this series are the printed histories of the NFPW written by the historian of the organization on a yearly basis, biographical data on former presidents and other officers, oral history transcripts of former presidents, and lists of officers and committees for each year. This series is arranged alphabetically.

The Subject Files series contains various materials such as brochures, Fiftieth Anniversary planning papers, member recognition and memorial services, and correspondence and publicity clippings regarding honorary members Helen Thomas and Jane Pauley. Also included are campaign literature, surveys, and testimony given by NFPW concerning freedom of information and discrimination against women broadcasters. This series is arranged alphabetically.

The Audio/Visual series consists of audio cassettes of oral interviews done with former presidents of the NFPW and an audio cassette featuring former president Mary Lou Webb from the Church of Latter Day Saints. Also included in this series are three rolls of microfilm containing issues of Press Woman from 1977 through 1988, copies of early correspondence and reports, and oral history transcripts.
