INTRODUCTION

Records of a protestant church in a German community in Gasconade County, Missouri. The collection also includes records of the neighboring St. James Evangelical and Bethel Evangelical churches.

DONOR INFORMATION

The St. Paul United Church of Christ Records were loaned to the University of Missouri by the church for microfilming on 8 July 1998 (Accession No.5766).

ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

As a result of the union of two protestant groups, the church was founded in 1844 as the Evangelical St. Paul Church of Hermann. The first pastor was Friedrich Hundhausen. A church building was started in the same year and completed in 1846, the first in Hermann. A new building was completed in 1907.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Record books of the St. Paul United Church of Christ include nearly complete records of baptisms, marriages, and confirmations, with death records beginning in 1854, communions in 1895, and scattered gift records. The records are arranged chronologically and are in German through 1917.

The collection also contains similar records of St. James Evangelical Church, Big Spring, Missouri, 1884-1943, and Bethel Evangelical Church, Case, Missouri, 1887-1924. As with the St. Paul Church, the early entries are recorded in German.
