The Pam Rich Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Pam Rich on 31 March 1992 (Accession No. 5156).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Pam Rich was born on 5 December 1945 in Jefferson City, Missouri. She received her B.A. in sociology and political science from the University of Missouri and taught at a Catholic grade school for two years before working at the Missouri Association for Retarded Citizens. She then went on to work for State Representative Russell Goward from 1974 to 1978 as an administrative assistant and as a research analyst for the Governor's Commission on Campaign Reform and Official Conduct. She was hired by the Women's Political Caucus in 1979 to lobby for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in the Missouri legislature.

She was an active member of Common Cause, the Missouri Coalition for Correctional Justice, and the National Abortion Rights Alliance. She also acted as a counselor for Reproductive Health Services and was vice-president of the Jefferson City Montessori Society.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Pam Rich Papers consist of newsletters, correspondence, campaign brochures, and publicity clippings regarding the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. They document the efforts of Rich and the Women's Political Caucus to push the amendment through the Missouri state legislature. The collection is arranged into two series:

The Equal Rights Amendment series, arranged alphabetically by topic, is made up of publicity clippings for and against the ERA, position statements about the ERA and National Organization for Women, and newsletters from the Missouri ERA Coalition. This series helps to document the publicity campaign run by people on both sides of the ERA issue.

The Women's Political Caucus series, also arranged alphabetically by topic, consists of campaign brochures, lobbyist's notes on various legislators, correspondence with legislators, newsletters and correspondence from the Missouri State Women's Political Caucus and National Women's Political Caucus, speeches given by Pam Rich, and candidate questionnaires from the 1978 election. This series is particularly helpful in understanding how a lobbyist worked the state legislature, and also, through the candidate questionnaires, understand the reasoning behind a legislator's voting on the ERA and other related issues.
