SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Suzanne Levine Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, memos, publicity, readers' surveys, and editorial notes and document Levine's work at Ms. Magazine and the professional organizations of which she is part. The papers are arranged in four series:

The Ms. Magazine series is comprised of correspondence and editorial notes arranged alphabetically by the article's author, and photographs, memos, publicity, story ideas, and reader's surveys, also arranged alphabetically by topic. This series is the bulk of the collection and gives researchers a good idea of the editorial process at a major magazine.

The Ms. Foundation series contains correspondence, memos, and story ideas for the Ms. Book series, the syndicated Ms. TV show, and Ms. HBO specials which were funded, in part, by the Ms.Foundation for Education and Communication. This series is arranged alphabetically by topic.

The Personal series includes personal correspondence, information on the fellowships awarded to Levine and the college and organization boards she has sat on, including Radcliffe College and the Women's Action Alliance. This series is arranged alphabetically by topic.

The Professional Organizations series contains correspondence, notes, and memos from the various professional organizations Levine is involved in such as the Women's Media Group and American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME). This series, arranged alphabetically by the organization's name, shows how the magazine industry dealt with the issues of pornography, journalism education, and sexism.

The Volumes series contains a history of the 1970s, and two books edited or written by Levine.
