George M. Butler surveyed lands in Lafayette County and bought the Lexington Telegraph on October 18, 1845. With the outbreak of the Mexican War, he raised a company of infantry and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant on June 1, 1846, for the Lafayette County Volunteers, a company of cavalry attached to the 23rd Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Division of the Missouri Militia. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The George M. Butler Papers consist of survey notes, correspondence, military commissions, and financial records. The papers are arranged into two sections: a survey record book and personal.
The survey record book provides the results of Butler's survey work. The personal material comprises two military commission certificates and correspondence relative to his military service in the Mexican War. Butler's financial records, most of which were receipts for the payment of accounts to different companies that he conducted business with, loans he paid back, and court costs he owed to the Lafayette County Court make up the rest of the section.
