INTRODUCTION

The records of the Freedom Zion Methodist Church consist of the quarterly annual conference minutes of the church. The records are in German. A translation of the records is included in the collection. These records are part of the German Heritage Archives.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Freedom Zion Methodist Church, Concordia, Missouri, Records were loaned to the University of Missouri for copying by Reverend Charlotte Carbough on 11 November 1994 (Accession No. 5433). The records are part of the German Heritage Archives.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

In 1842 the Methodist missionary Sebastian Barth began to preach in Concordia. David Huhne was the first minister, although he lived in Lexington. The first resident minister was Phillip Hehner who came to Concordia in 1859. The church was located outside of Concordia until 1872 when a new church was built in the town. In 1903 another church building was dedicated.

The church was part of the Freedom Circuit, Kansas District, Methodist Episcopal Church.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records of the Freedom Zion Methodist Church consists of minutes of the quarter annual conferences and covers the years 1861 through 1893. Interspersed among the minutes are membership lists as well as lists of baptisms, marriages, and deaths which span the years from 1851 to the 1920s.

The translation of the minutes was done by Dr. Adolf E. Schroeder, Professor Emeritus of German at the University of Missouri-Columbia as part of his tenure as "Scholar-in-Residence" at Concordia, made possible by a grant from the Missouri Humanities Council to the Concordia Area Heritage Society for 1993/1994. The translation was recorded on audiotape and was then transcribed by Ruth Rodewald of Concordia. The transcription of the volume is included on the microfilm and is also available in hard copy in the reading room. The lists interspersed among the minutes have not been translated.
