INTRODUCTION

Manuscripts of fiction and non-fiction works by Mumpower, a psychologist and University of Missouri alumnus who taught at the University of Southwestern Louisiana.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Mumpower Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Daniel L. Mumpower on 6 May 1992 (Accession No. 5171). Additions (Accession No. 5634) to the papers were made on 28 May 1996, 16 March 1998, and 3 March 1999.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Daniel L. Mumpower was born in 1917 in the Belgian Congo, the son of Methodist missionaries. The family returned to the United States in 1922 and resided in Nashville, Tennessee. Mumpower attended Peabody College and taught high school English in Jackson, Mississippi, in the early 1940s. He was in the army during World War II and served in the Pacific and occupied Japan.

After the war Mumpower went back to teaching and was the assistant principal at Central High School in Jackson. He was recalled to military duty in 1951 and was sent to West Germany. In 1955 he went to graduate school at the University of Missouri and received a PhD in Psychology in 1957. He taught at the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Mumpower retired in 1978 and returned to Jackson, Mississippi.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Mumpower Papers consist of manuscripts, poems, and songs. The manuscripts are arranged as the author had them and all of the manuscripts are undated. The material covers a variety of topics and includes fiction and psychological writings. The short story collection Celestial Fire was based on the papers of his parents which are included in the Daniel L. and Edith B. Mumpower Papers, also at the University of Missouri Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia.
