INTRODUCTION
Typescript of the Autobiography of J. A. Ward, M.D. written by a nineteenth century Lincoln County, Missouri, doctor.
DONOR INFORMATION
The James A. Ward Memoir was loaned to the State Historical Society of Missouri for copying by John E. Long on February 22, 1993 (SHS Accession No. 2951).
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
In a short autobiography written in 1908 at the age of 82, Dr. James A. Ward sketches episodes in his life: a childhood on the Missouri frontier of the 1830s; lead mining in Wisconsin; an aborted rush to the California goldfields in 1850; early medical practice in Lincoln County, Missouri; Civil War experiences; and settling in Troy, Missouri. Very little of the narrative concerns Ward's medical practice. His early education, his views on the Civil War and slavery, some technical aspects of building construction, and Ward family history are some of the highlights of the account.
