INTRODUCTION

Correspondence and files belonging to St. Louis attorney James H. Meredith concerning Stuart Symington's 1952-1960 campaigns for U. S. Senate and President, for which Meredith acted as Missouri state coordinator.

DONOR INFORMATION

The James H. Meredith Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Mr. Meredith on 1 August 1973 (Accession No. 3928).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

James Hargrove Meredith was born 25 August 1914 in Wedderburn, Oregon. In 1937 he graduated from the University of Missouri with an LL.B.. That same year he was admitted to the Missouri bar and began practicing law in New Madrid County. From 1942 to 1944 he was a special agent for the F.B.I., and from 1944 to 1946 he served in the U. S. Naval Reserve.

After World War II Meredith resumed his New Madrid County law practice until 1952, when he became a partner in the St. Louis firm of Stolar, Kuhlmann, and Meredith. In 1952 he also became the state-wide campaign coordinator for Stuart Symington in Symington's run for the U.S. Senate. Meredith remained Symington's point man in Missouri through the Senator's unsuccessful bid for President in 1960, after which he became a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Stuart and Meredith.

In 1962 Meredith was appointed judge to the U.S. District Court, Eastern District, Missouri, and in 1971 was appointed Chief Judge, a post he held until 1979. In 1979 and 1980 Meredith served as judge on the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Throughout his professional life James Meredith served on many special boards and committees in St. Louis and throughout the state including the Missouri Insurance Department, 1949-1952; the Missouri Mental Health Commission, 1961-1962; and the U.S. Judicial Conference, 1971-1987.

Meredith died 8 December 1988 in St. Louis.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The James H. Meredith Papers document Stuart Symington's Missouri campaigns for his successful bids for U.S. Senator in 1952 and 1958, and his unsuccessful "Favorite Son" campaigns for the U.S. Presidency in 1956 and 1960. The collection consists primarily of correspondence to and from Symington's campaign coordinator, but also includes newsclippings, voting statistics, and lists of campaign volunteers and contributors. This collection is arranged into two series: Correspondence and Campaign Files.

Much of the Correspondence deals with setting up county organizations around the state to work for the election and re-election of Stuart Symington: asking people to serve on committees, thanking them for doing so, and setting forth agendas and financial quotas for each county. At the same time, Meredith was also in contact with Symington's Administrative Assistant in Washington, D.C., Stanley Fike; coordinating personal appearance schedules, distribution of campaign literature, and press releases. The Correspondence Series is arranged chronologically.

The Campaign Files are arranged by subject matter and then chronologically within each subject. This series consists of lists of campaign volunteers; financial reports; and voting statistics, by county, of most of the major state-wide elections held from 1952 to 1958. Included in this series is miscellaneous material consisting of two road maps marking Symington's campaign stops in 1958; a blueprint of Missouri lands owned by the National Livestock and Mining Company of Seattle, Washington; and a 1958 copy of the Democratic National Committee rules.
