INTRODUCTION

Records of a professional association of academics and practitioners of community development in the United States and Canada, which promotes the effective practice of community development through advancement of education and research in the field. The records consist of correspondence and memoranda of officers; board meeting minutes; committee records; annual meeting materials; issues of the Journal of the Community Development Society and other publications; membership brochures, directories, newsletters, and surveys; and other assorted organizational records.

DONOR INFORMATION

The records of the Community Development Society were donated to the University of Missouri by the organization through various officers of the society beginning in 1975. Complete donor information is available in the information folder. The Western Historical Manuscript Collection serves as the official archives of the organization and will continue to receive its records.

ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

Following a conference concerning the role of universities in community development held at the University of Missouri-Columbia in January 1969, conference participants were invited to meet to consider the creation of an association for community development professionals and others with similar interests and concerns.

From the initial meeting of seventeen, all of whom were affiliated with universities, a five member committee was established to proceed with the organization of a professional community development association. At the first annual meeting, held at the University of Missouri-Columbia on October 19-21, 1969, a constitution and bylaws were adopted, officers and board members were chosen, and Lee Cary of the University of Missouri-Columbia was elected president.

By the end of 1969 membership in the Society stood at 442. The first issue of the Journal of the Community Development Society was published in the spring of 1970 and state chapters began forming, beginning with Nebraska in the fall of 1973.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The records of the Community Development Society document all aspects of the organization's efforts to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among society members, to publish and disseminate community development information, to advocate a community development approach to social problems, and to establish itself as the primary professional association in the field of community development. The records are arranged into ten series:

Unless noted otherwise in the following series descriptions, material is arranged chronologically. To facilitate the incorporation of additions to the records, each series is separately numbered. The series letter and folder number appear in the folder list and on the folder labels.

In addition to routine administrative duties, the President's Office series documents that office's involvement with program planning for the annual meeting, interaction with CDS committees, sections, and state chapters; marketing and outreach activities; and general communication with the CDS membership. Correspondence preceding and following the individual's term of office is included. Much of the correspondence produced by this office has not been collected.

The Secretary-Treasurer's Office series focuses primarily on the membership priorities of that office; i.e., dues and distribution of the Journal and the society's newsletter, the Vanguard, and financial and budgetary matters. Much of the correspondence produced by this office has not been collected.

The Editor's correspondence relates to publication of the Journal of the Community Development Society. The series is arranged into a general section which concerns general policies and administrative functions, and correspondence connected with articles submitted for publication. Both the published paper and rejected paper sections contain review forms, correspondence with authors concerning revisions, and in some cases revised versions of papers. Published articles are arranged by the issue in which they were published, rejected articles are in chronological order. Much of the correspondence produced by the editors has not been collected.

Records pertaining to CDS Annual Meetings include correspondence, planning records, brochures and other promotional materials, registration lists, program schedules, photographs, abstracts and copies of papers presented, and other assorted materials. The types and amount of records varies for each meeting. Related materials may be found in the President's Office series.

The Board of Directors Meeting Minutes are nearly complete and include CDS committee and treasurer's reports. The Committees series consists of reports to the Board of Directors, most of which can be found in the board meeting minutes; specific issue reports; correspondence and memoranda; meeting minutes; rosters of committee chairmen and members; and other byproducts of committee actions. The series also contains some member section records. CDS sections comprise members with similar interests within the field of community development. These records are arranged alphabetically by committee or section name and chronologically within each division.

Amended versions of the Society's Constitution and Bylaws and policies and operational guidelines are found in the series of that title. The Financial series contains treasurer's reports, also found in the board meeting minutes; general ledgers; and miscellaneous financial records.

The Membership series contains a number of different types of materials, all related to interaction with the CDS membership. Arranged by type of material and chronologically within those sections, this series contains membership brochures, membership directories, election candidate profiles, issues of the organization newsletter, the Vanguard, and records of CDS state chapters.

Issues of the Journal of the Community Development Society, other CDS sponsored publications, and community development related publications comprise the Publications series.
