INTRODUCTION

Papers of Gladys K. Pihlblad, Director of Student Affairs for Women at the University of Missouri from 1952 to 1973. Her papers cover such subjects as women, blacks, homosexuals, student unrest, University organizations, and University events. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, photographs and reports.

The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Gladys K. Pihlblad on 29 August 1986 (Accession No. 4736).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Gladys Koepke Pihlblad was born on August 24, 1908 in Bellingham, Minnesota to Gustav and Clara Koepke. In 1930 she received her A.B. from Yankton College and in 1949 her M.A. from the University of Minnesota.

From 1931 to 1940, she was a teacher and counselor for girls at Senior High School, Cambridge, Minnesota and served with the United States Coast Guard Women Reserve from 1943 to 1946. From 1946 to 1949 she was a disciplinary counselor in the Office of the Dean of Students at the University of Minnesota. Pihlblad was the Director of Student Affairs for Women at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, from 1949 to 1952.

She was the Director of Student Affairs for Women at the University of Missouri in Columbia from 1952 to 1973. On October 18, 1959 she married Carl Terence Pihlblad.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The papers of Gladys K. Pihlblad consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, photographs and reports and are concerned with her work from 1952 to 1973. The papers are arranged alphabetically by organization or topic and chronologically thereunder.

Proposals, minutes and correspondence comprise the section on the Committee on Student Organizations, a committee made up of students concerned with student life on campus. The bulk of the correspondence section deals with the administrative details of Pihlblad's office. The newspaper clippings and pamphlets section has stories on discrimination in employment of the middle aged, blacks, homosexuals, Kent State University, student unrest and women's rights.

The sections of the Office of Student Affairs for Women and Office of Student Life deal with the administration of these two offices and issues concerning students. The Office of Student Life encompasses all aspects of student life whereas the Office of Student Affairs for Women is only concerned with women.

The section dealing with the centenary of the entrance of women to the University of Missouri consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, memorabilia, programs, and pam­phlets. The Presidents section primarily covers the inaugurations and retirements of University Presidents Elmer Ellis, Frederick Middlebush, Charles Brice Ratchford and John Weaver.

The Student Affairs Committee section consists of minutes and correspondence dealing with student problems and life on campus by various University offices. The last section consists of correspondence, miscellaneous material, newspaper clippings, notes, and pamphlets and concerns research into the various traditions of the University of Missouri by Pihlblad.
