BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

John Henry Schiermeier was born 1 February 1861 near Foristell, Missouri, to William and Catherine Schiermeier. He attended the German Lutheran School in New Melle and studied business and bookkeeping at Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton, Missouri. He was a clerk for two years in a store in New Melle, then at the E.M. Pringle store, and then entered into partnership with John Schatz. He remained with Schatz until around 1888. In 1889 Schiermeier went into partnership with his brother Ernst forming J.H. Schiermeier and Bro. and buying out the A.E. Forderhase store in Foristell. In 1894 he left Foristell to establish a business in Matson, Missouri, where he also became postmaster.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Schiermeier Record Books consist of eight volumes and one folder of miscellaneous invoices. There are five letter books, which contain copies of personal and business letters sent by Schiermeier. There are alphabetical indexes in front of the letter books. There is a ledger from the A.E. Forderhase General Store in Foristell which was purchased by Schiermeier. The ledger lists customers but they are not in chronological or alphabetical order. There are also two volumes of stock inventories, lease agreements, and ledger entries. The first volume of stock inventories lists the stock purchased by Schatz and Schiermeier from A.E. Forderhase in 1883.

Further information on the Schiermeier family can be found in the Missouri Collection (C3982).
