INTRODUCTION

The papers of Pihlblad, a sociology professor at the University of Missouri from 1930 to 1967, primarily concern Pihlblad's research in gerontology. The papers include correspondence, papers, and articles by Pihlblad and other sociologists, and material on aging studies conducted in Missouri during the 1960s.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Pihlblad Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Pihlblad's wife Gladys on 29 August 1986 (Accession No. 4735).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

C. Terence Pihlblad was born in Lindsborg, Kansas, in 1897. After receiving a bachelor's degree in music from Bethany College in 1917, Pihlblad took both the master's (1920) and Ph.D. (1925) degrees in sociology at the University of Missouri. After serving as an associate professor of sociology at Wittenberg College, he returned to the Sociology Department at the University of Missouri in 1930. He served as chairman of the department, 1942-1953 and 1955-1961.

Some of the outstanding professional activities of Professor Pihlblad included service as director of the Missouri Study of Relief and Destitution during the depression; senior price economist for the Office of Price Administration during World War II; Fulbright Scholar at the University of Olso, Norway, 1953-1954; president of the Midwest Sociological Society in 1956; director of the University Research Committee for the Missouri report to the 1960 White House Conference on Aging; charter member of the Midwest Council on Research in Aging; and member of the 1971 White House Conference on Aging.

Dr. Pihlblad's research interests included criminology, race relations, rural sociology, gerontology, and topics in Scandinavian sociology.

Retiring from teaching in 1967, Dr. Pihlblad was made emeritus professor in 1969 and continued to pursue his research interests until his death in 1978.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Pihlblad Papers arranged in two series: Subject Files and Correspondence, and concentrates on Professor Pihlblad's research in gerontology during the 1960s and 1970s.

The Subject Files are arranged alphabetically. Significant topics are a 1961 study of the elderly in Missouri; a multi-year study of the elderly in small towns in Missouri; and copies of Pihlblad's and other sociologists papers which are more representative of his career and include such subjects as rural migration, class and occupation choices, social mobility in Norway, the elderly Norway, widowhood, and the elderly in small Missouri towns. Also of note are materials regarding the Midwest Committee for Social Research in Aging.

There is a small file of material from the Sociology Department at the University of Missouri which includes memoranda, correspondence, course descriptions and materials pertaining to the graduate program and faculty. There are also dissertation proposals and departmental forms of Ph.D. candidates.

Correspondence is limited to the 1960s and 1970s, is arranged chronologically, and concerns research projects, publication matters, recommendations, professional conferences, and legislation related to the elderly.
