INTRODUCTION
Records of a regional association centered in Missouri and Kansas and comprising university professors and other specialists in Soviet and East European Studies. Affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. The records include correspondence, conference programs, copies of papers presented, membership lists, and promotional material concerning the annual conferences sponsored by the organization.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Central Slavic Conference Records were donated to the University of Missouri by the conference through Charles E. Timberlake on 24 July 1985 (Accession No. 4617).
HISTORICAL SKETCH
The Central Slavic Conference was founded in 1961 as the Bi-State Slavic Conference and was renamed to the present name in 1970. While primarily an organization of historians concentrating on the Soviet Union, the conference also presents the research of political scientists, geographers, economists, linguists, sociologists, anthropologists, art historians, and Slavic language and literature specialists from not only academia but also Slavic specialists in the publishing industry, the federal government, research libraries, and Slavic ethnic organizations.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The records are arranged chronologically; documents from each year's conference include correspondence, program materials, and membership lists.
The correspondence is primarily that of the president of the conference, who is appointed for a one-year term and is responsible for organizing the conference at his or her institution. It chiefly concerns establishing panel themes based on paper submissions, paper topics, scheduling of panels, arranging for commentators and chairpersons, as well as making local arrangements and obtaining a featured banquet speaker. Correspondence for some years is missing.
Program materials include the conference program, schedule, registration materials, copies of some of the papers presented and notes of panel members, and promotional materials including announcements, clippings, and press releases. A short history of the organization up to 1972 is included in the program materials of the 1972 conference.
Membership materials include mailing lists and conference registration lists. Not all years contain membership materials.
There is one folder of material pertaining to the Council of Regional Affiliates, an organization representing the various regional associations and conferences in the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. The material includes correspondence of the Central Slavic Conference representative and minutes of meetings concerning the functioning and organization of regional associations and participation within the AAASS.
There is also one folder of material from the executive board of the Central Slavic Conference, which was the general administrative body of the conference comprised of past presidents of the conference. Minutes of meetings and correspondence relating to the annual conference, dues and membership, establishment of an organizational archives, and relationships with other regional organizations and the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies are covered by the material in this folder.
