INTRODUCTION
Papers of, and materials collected by, a Fulton, Missouri, resident relating to the history and residents of Callaway County. The collection is comprised of correspondence, copies of speeches and lectures given by Bell on historical topics, and documents including a typescript 1849 diary by James Tate, tax rolls for Callaway County, Callaway County Agricultural and Mechanical Society membership lists, and a regimental history and troop roster of Company B, 1st Missouri Cavalry, C.S.A.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Bell Collection was donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Ovid H. Bell through William Parrish on 10 January 1978 (SHS Accession No. 2134). An addition to the collection was made on 20 March 1978 (SHS Accession No. 2137).

Given by Bell on a variety of topics including the early history of Missouri; the history of Fulton; the Presbyterian church in that city; the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri; William Dabney Kerr, the founder of the Missouri School for the Deaf; and aspects of U.S. colonial history. |
| f. 5-7 | Callaway County Tax Rolls, 1824, 1861, n.d. The 1824 volume includes legal description of land; values of land, slaves, cattle, and other property; and county tax levied. The other two volumes include legal description of land and state and local taxes owed. All volumes arranged alphabetically by surname of property owner. |
| f. 8 | Colonel James Tate Diary, 1849. The diary describes Tate's journey from Fulton, Missouri, to Sacramento, California. Included with the diary is Tate's obituary (1850) and a letter (1 July 1849) written by Tate to Major Daniel Nolley while on the trail west. The diary, obituary, and letter are typescript copies. |
