FOLDER LIST

History Series

The History series contains most of the information concerning the establishment of stores, companies, and other businesses. Included in the histories are when and where stores, theaters and other businesses were started, important events in the city's history, and the names of business owners, unions, doctors, and city officials.

A large part of the collection details the history of mining in St. François County, historically of great importance to the region. There is information on all aspects of mining operations, including histories of the mining companies, the location of their mines and plants, the numbers of employees, the amount of money invested in land and plants, the number of mine shafts each company had and the years they were sunk, a list of active labor unions, and the price of lead for a number of years during the period 1913-1965. Also included are descriptions of the mines, smelting plants, mining procedures, statistics on lead production, sales, and consumption and lists of the presidents, managers, and directors of the St. Joseph and Central Lead Companies.

Histories of four railroads that ran through St. François County include information on the routes, mining companies served, freight carried, and lists of the owners and name changes. Included are the Missouri-Illinois Railroad Company, the St. François County Electric Railroad Company, the St. Joe and Desloge Railway, and the Mississippi and Bonne Terre Railroad.
