INTRODUCTION

The Annette Riley Fry Papers contain primarily correspondence between Fry and people, or relatives of people, who came to Missouri from New York on "orphan trains" sponsored by the Children's Aid Society during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Fry wrote an article on the orphans which appeared in the December 1974 issue of American Heritage.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Fry Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Annette R. Fry on 20 August 1983 (SHS Accession No. 2486).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The major strength of the collection is the correspondence between Fry and the orphans who came West on the "orphan trains," or their relatives. The correspondence contains photographs, newspaper articles, and other information on the orphans. Also included is correspondence with a number of Missouri newspapers, the State Historical Society of Missouri, and the Kansas City Public Library, and a scattered series of Children's Aid Society annual reports from 1882 to 1923.
