INTRODUCTION

The papers of an Alabama-born poet and writer, professor of English at the University of Missouri-Columbia, 1953-1982, and associate editor of the Missouri Review, includes correspondence, photographs, diaries, manuscripts, books, newspaper clippings, poetry, sketches, audio cassettes, and student work.

DONOR INFORMATION

The McAfee Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Jeanie K. McAfee on 25 November 1985 (Accession No. 4685) and John David Flynn on 8 December 1985 (Accession No. 4686).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

James Thomas McAfee was born 13 May 1928 to Robert Grady and Ethel Gentle McAfee of Haleyville, Alabama. McAfee's mother died five years later. A short time later his father married Ethel Haley Tubb, a widow with a young daughter, Telia Sue. Following her death in 1959, Robert McAfee married Jeanie Edgil.

Tom McAfee attended the Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee, graduating in 1945. After a short stay at the Kenyon School of English in Gambier, Ohio, McAfee entered the University of Missouri at Columbia. He received his bachelor's degree in English in 1949 and his master's degree in 1950.

McAfee was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950. He received his discharge papers two years later. McAfee then returned to the University of Missouri and began his teaching career. In the next twenty-nine years McAfee taught courses in poetry, book reviewing, and practical criticism. He served as editor of the Sunday book page for the Columbia Missourian and associate editor of the Missouri Review. He also sat on the advisory board for the American Audio Prose Library.

McAfee began his writing career in his early twenties. His first book of poems and short stories, Poems and Stories, was published in 1960. Nine more were published in the years that followed: Four Poets (1967), I'll Be Home Late Tonight (1967), The Body and The Body's Guest (1975), Time Now (1977), The Tempo Changes. The Lights Go Up. The Partners Change (1978), Whatever Isn't Glory (1980), Flight: (1981), and My Confidant, Catullus (1983). McAfee's only novel, Rover Youngblood, published in 1969, was also made into a play and produced by the University of Missouri Readers Theatre group.

McAfee was a member of the Author's Guild, and his name appeared in such prestigious listings as the Directory of American Poets, International Who's Who in Poetry, The World Who's Who of Authors, and Marquis Who's Who in America (Midwest).

McAfee succumbed to lung cancer on 10 August 1982 after a short stay at the Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia. As per his instructions, his body was donated to the University School of Medicine for scientific research.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

These papers provide a particularly comprehensive view of James T. "Tom" McAfee--poet, writer, and teacher. The collection emphasizes McAfee's literary style, accomplishments, and teaching abilities through extensive correspondence, play and book manuscripts, published and unpublished poetry, and class notes. Not as well represented is the personal side of McAfee. Family correspondence and diaries do provide some insight into the man himself, but not much beyond a surface level. The papers are divided into three series: Correspondence, Personal, and Professional.

The Correspondence, the largest series of the collection, dates from 1956 to 1985, and is between Tom McAfee and his family, friends, former students, colleagues, and literary contacts. It is arranged in alphabetical order by correspondent's last name. The last five folders contain letters that are either unsigned or the identity of the author was impossible to determine. These items are arranged in chronological order.

The Personal series includes diaries, estate records, financial records, military service records, a scrapbook, and photographs. McAfee's diaries, written in 1968, 1972, 1974, and 1975, reveal his personal and professional relationships, his interests, his literary activities, and his thoughts about himself and his world. The estate records contain obituaries, funeral and memorial arrangements, and correspondence relating to the disposition of McAfee's estate and literary copyrights. The financial records include income tax forms, royalty statements, bank statements, a passbook, stock payments, and income/expenditure sheets. A draft notice, transfer and assignment orders, and discharge papers make up the military service records. The scrapbook contains campaign stickers and pins, newspaper articles on family members, doctoral course work, art work, and other memorabilia collected by McAfee. The photographs depict McAfee, family members, friends and their children, and students and are arranged in chronological order. The last two folders of photographs are undated.

The Professional series is divided into six sections: University of Missouri-Columbia, teaching material, reference, publicity, literary material, and audio cassettes. The University of Missouri-Columbia section includes documents relating to McAfee's appointments at the university from 1953 to 1980 consisting of notices of salary upgrades, promotions, and sabbatical leaves. Faculty evaluations from 1962 to 1982, made up of service reports, salary recommendations, and other materials compiled annually to evaluate performance, are in this section. A cumulative record of publications, teaching schedules, and academic accomplishments comprise McAfee's faculty record dating from 1972 to 1981. This section also has grant applications sent to the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, American Council of Learned Societies from 1962 to 1981, and university fellowships. Information on various grant, fellowship, and award programs from 1960 to 1982; pamphlets, bulletins, and newsletters from conferences, workshops, forums and literary societies McAfee either lectured at or was a member of from 1966 to 1981; and updated resumes compiled for inclusion in the faculty record, grant applications, and literary publications conclude this section

The teaching material was compiled by McAfee from the courses he taught. It includes class notes, copies of exams, student evaluations, and student work--poems, papers and stories. The reference material was collected by McAfee and meant for everyday use or to serve as inspirations for future poems and stories. It consists of clippings, quotes, recipes, the literary works of friends and colleagues, local history texts, and addresses of friends, family, and publishers. The publicity section is made up of book reviews, interviews, press releases, and readings.

The literary materials include published collections of poetry and stories and a copy of Rover Youngblood, McAfee's only novel. Copies of contracts between McAfee and the publishers of Poems And Stories, Rover Youngblood, and I'll Be Home Late Tonight are in this section as well as drawings and doodles, some of which were meant for publication with poems or for space fillers. The manuscripts of published and unpublished plays, poetry collections, and novels include script adaptations and production material for Rover Youngblood. Journals and magazines which carry McAfee's poetry and stories are arranged in chronological order by date of publication. Published and unpublished poetry and stories that were processed prior to acquisition of the collection and arranged in alphabetical order by title are at the end of this section.

The audio cassettes include a recording of a rehearsal for the Readers Theatre's production of Rover Youngblood at the university. On a radio interview by Robert Dyer for his poetry show on radio station KOPN McAfee reads and discusses the poems: "Suicide of Poets," "The Body and the Body's Guest," and "School Being Over." An interview for the University of Missouri-Columbia's Poetry Week where McAfee discusses the play, the short story, the short poem, and "The Body and the Body's Guest" concludes this section.
