INTRODUCTION
The papers of a St. Louis physician and entomologist include personal correspondence with amateur and professional entomologists concerning entomology and the exchange of specimens for Meiners's insect collection and collections of correspondence of nineteenth and twentieth century entomologists, naturalists, and natural history organizations.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Meiners Collection was transferred to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia by the University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Entomology on 12 November 1984 (Accession No. 4599)
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Edwin P. Meiners received his medical training and practiced medicine in St. Louis, where he was on the staff of St. Luke's Hospital. His lifelong avocation was insects, and he became a well-known and respected amateur entomologist acquiring, in addition to a large insect collection, the writings and correspondence of other entomologists and naturalists. His special interests were medical entomology, the history of entomology, insects in art and culture, and insects in Missouri. He willed his collection of over 35,000 insects to the Department of Entomology at the University of Missouri-Columbia after his death in 1960 at the age of 67.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Meiners Collection is arranged into eight series:
- Meiners Correspondence, 1916-1960
- St. Louis Natural History Museum Association, 1918-1923
- Greater St. Louis Museum of Natural History, 1930-1937
- Bassett, Homer F., Collection, 1862-1894
- Rau, Philip, Collection
- Slossen, Annie Trumbull, Collection, 1886-1912
- Van Duzee, Edward P., Collection, 1851-1939
- Miscellaneous Collections
Much of the correspondence in Meiners' collections deals with the exchange of insect specimens, data, and lists of insects in their scientific names for inclusion in an insect collection or for the purpose of determining the scientific classification and name of the insect. The collections often provide insight into the personal lives of the correspondents and into the friendships that developed over the years between people of similar interests. Many of the letters contain discussions about methodology, classification, nomenclature, and the state of the science of entomology; comments about the climate and economic conditions that affected insect collecting; and glimpses of personal, professional, and academic disagreements. The letters also demonstrated the joy of collecting, the excitement when a new species was found, and the love of nature felt by many of the entomologists and naturalists.
Meiners's letters document his concern that the insects of Missouri be collected and studied, his interest in the history of entomology, and his interest in insects in art, literature, and culture. The collections of the St. Louis Natural History Museum Association and the Greater St. Louis Museum of Natural History provide insight into the difficulties of establishing a cultural institution in a community such as St. Louis.
Meiners grouped his personal correspondence and that of the collections he acquired alphabetically according to the correspondent's name. Incoming and outgoing correspondence for each person was filed together in chronological order. This organization has been maintained. Often the correspondence of one person appears in several of Meiners's collections. For example, correspondence with Hermann Schwarz may be found in Meiners's personal correspondence, in both of the museum association collections, in the Philip Rau collection, and in the collection of Schwarz's personal correspondence.

Slossen, Annie Trumbull, Collection, 1886-1912. (1821-1926) was a writer of short stories and also an amateur entomologist with a reputation as a collector who was able to find rare specimens. She collected many kinds of insects in New Hampshire at her summer home in Franconia and on Mt. Washington, and in Florida where she spent the late winter and spring. She spent the fall and winter in New York City. She sent her insects to expert entomologists to be identified. Most of the correspondence is from these experts; the letters often enclosed lists of the insects that had been identified.

Van Duzee, Edward P., Collection, 1851-1939. Edward P. Van Duzee was an entomologist who became the leading expert in the U.S. on hemiptera (bugs) and compiled the Catalogue of the Hemiptera of America North of Mexico in 1917. He was a librarian for over twenty years at the Grosvenor Library in Buffalo, New York, until 1912 when he moved to California. From 1912 to 1914 he was with the Scripps Institute in La Jolla, California; from 1914 to 1916 he was a faculty member of the Department of Entomology, University of California, Berkeley; and after 1916 he was curator of insects, California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
Most of the correspondence dates from the mid-1880s until 1916 and is incoming; however, after his move to California he began to keep copies of the letters he sent out. Since Van Duzee specialized in hemiptera, almost all of the letters refer to this order. Entomologists often sent their specimens to Van Duzee for determination; many of the letters are concerned with the identification of insects. Van Duzee developed strong friendships with many of his correspondents, and these letters reveal the personal side of a highly respected entomologist.
