The estate appraisal of John Birk, listing slaves, furniture, livestock, books and papers, carpenter and blacksmith tools illuminates the depth of material within the papers. Additional materials include receipts for taxes, wills and codicils; the instructions for the care, disposition of, or emancipation of slaves; statements of estate settlement, names and relationships of heirs, powers of attorney, baptism papers, and petitions. Wills (1766-1839), are filed alphabetically.
