DONOR INFORMATION

The Missouri State Archives donated the microfilm copy of the Hearnes Papers to the University of Missouri on 22 September 1978 (Accession No. 4091).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Warren E. Hearnes was born on July 24, 1923, in Charleston, Missouri. He was educated in the Charleston Public Schools and was graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, in 1946 with a B.S. degree, and from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1952 with A.B and LL.B. degrees.

He began the practice of law in East Prairie in 1952, continuing through 1961. He was elected to the House of Representatives from Mississippi County in 1950. He was continually re-elected through the 1950s and was elected majority floor leader in 1957 and 1959.

He became Secretary of State in 1961 and was elected Governor in 1964. He was re-elected in 1968.

He was chosen to serve during 1969 as vice-chairman of the Midwestern Governors' Conference and as a member of the Executive Board of the National Governors' Conference.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Hearnes Papers are arranged into nineteen series. A series list with brief descriptions of the series follows.

Arranged alphabetically by person's or organization's name. Within the alphabetical division, the material is arranged chronologically.
