BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Born in 1897 in Odessa, Russia, Miller and his family immigrated to the United States where they settled in Kansas and pursued farming and cattle ranching. Miller graduated from St. Benedict's College in Atchison, Kansas. After graduation, Miller worked as a reporter for the Atchison Kansas Globe, and in 1923 became reporter with the Kansas City Star. He left Kansas City in 1929 for Waldo, Missouri, where he purchased a local paper; in 1931 he moved again to Iowa to edit the Milford Iowa Mail. Miller moved to the Washington Missourian in 1937.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This interview is one of four interviews with Missouri newspaper editors which constituted a pilot oral history project of the Western Historical Manuscript Collection. Mike Coogan, a graduate student in history, conducted the interviews.
Topics covered include Miller's background, U.S. political parties, the role of news editors, government regulation of the news media, life and attitudes in Washington, Missouri, and contemporary issues. Included with the transcripts are Mike Coogan's overall impressions of the pilot oral history project, his general impression of Miller, and a tentative list of the questions to be used in the interview.
