BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
E.L. Dale was born 14 August 1890 in Kendall, Wisconsin. His father was a smelterman and his family moved around the Midwest, especially in Kansas and Missouri. When his family settled in the Carthage, Missouri, area, Dale began his newspaper apprenticeship with the Iola Register and the Carthage Democrat, eventually becoming editor for the Carthage Evening Press.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This interview is one of four interviews with Missouri newspaper editors which constituted a pilot oral history project of the Western Historical Manuscript Collection. Mike Coogan, a graduate student in history, conducted the interview.
Topics discussed include Dale's background, the role of news editor, the government's role in the news media, religious views, reactions to socialism and individualism in the United States, contemporary issues, and the conflict between urban and non-urban areas of Missouri. Included with the transcripts of the interview are Coogan's overall impressions of the pilot oral history project, his general impression of Dale, and a list of questions to be tentatively used in the interview.
