BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
H. Lang Rogers was born in Carthage, Missouri, in October 1919. His father was president of the Joplin Globe Publishing Company and his mother taught school. Lang graduated from Pembroke Country Day School in 1936 and Franklin and Marshall College in 1940. Starting in high school he served as a part-time reporter in Joplin. After his Marine Corps service, 1940 to 1946, he returned to Joplin to become a reporter for the Joplin Globe Publishing Company. In 1954 he became editor of the Joplin Globe and the Joplin News Herald.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This interview is one of four interviews with Missouri newspaper editors which constituted a pilot oral history project of the Western Historical Manuscript Collection. Mike Coogan, a graduate student in history, did the interviews.
Topics discussed in the interview include Rogers' background, views on the role of news editors, public opinion, contemporary issues in Missouri and the United States, religion, U.S. political parties and conflicts between Missouri's urban and non-urban areas. Included with the transcripts are Mike Coogan's overall impressions of the pilot oral history project, his general impression of Rogers, and a tentative list of the questions to be used in the interview.
