DONOR INFORMATION

The Norton Letters were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Mrs. P.B. Price for Mrs. Frederick N. Wells on 18 May 1971 (SHS Accession 834).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Norton Letters consist of two letters written by Norton to other Confederate Army officers and one letter to Norton from a friend. The first is to Major L.A. McClure, from Norton, 20 March 1864, regarding a friend's exploits and conditions in Memphis, Tennessee. The second is to an unnamed general from Norton, 15 July 1864, regarding mutual acquaintances; dangers to Richmond and Atlanta; the military activities of generals Johnston, Lee, and Forrest; politics, crops; currency; and getting the news through couriers. The last is to Norton from Jesse L. Price, Green County, Alabama, 12 January 1865, regarding the Battle of Franklin, the morale of soldiers, and news of friends in the service.
