INTRODUCTION

Records of Missouri Confederate veterans, compiled for the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Missouri Division, by local chapters. Records include four page record forms of biographical and historical data, arranged alphabetically by veteran's name; copies of rosters and muster rolls; and miscellaneous lists and records.

DONOR INFORMATION

These records were transferred from the State Historical Society of Missouri Library to the Manuscript Collection on April 30, 1970 (SHS Accession No. 678). The records had been microfilmed by the Missouri State Adjutant General's Office, but the Western Historical Manuscript Collection does not have a copy of that film. Copies of the Adjutant General's Office film are not available for purchase. The Western Historical Manuscript Collection filmed the records in 1994. This film is available through interlibrary loan.

ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Missouri Division, evolved in 1890 from the support of Missouri women for the Ex-Confederate Association of Missouri in their efforts to build and furnish a home near Higginsville for disabled Missouri Confederate veterans. The name Daughters of the Confederacy (D.O.C.) was coined by Mrs. A.C. Cassidy of St. Louis.

From marking soldiers' graves to creating educational, benevolent, patriotic, and historical programs, the society has rendered service to the South and the memory of Confederate soldiers, veterans, and their families. In 1922 and 1923, the UDC, Missouri Division, compiled biographical and historical information on Missouri veterans of the Confederate States Army. The work was directed by Mrs. Bernard C. Hunt of Columbia, Missouri, and her committee on Confederate veteran records.

When the records were compiled, there were few living veterans. Information was gleaned from county histories, obituaries, cemetery inscriptions, magazines, newspapers, published records, and interviews with relatives. The Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery records, Robert S. Bevier's Confederate 1st and 2nd Missouri Brigades, and the Confederate Veteran magazine are cited frequently as sources.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains biographical and historical information on 7,500 Missouri Confederate soldiers. Four page record forms comprise 299 folders of the collection. An additional seven folders contain copies of rosters and muster rolls, and miscellaneous lists and records. The collection is divided into two series:

The Record Forms series is arranged alphabetically by soldier's name. Some soldiers have more than one record form, each compiled by a different UDC chapter. There are discrepancies in dates and the spelling of names.

The first page of the record form gives the name of the person collecting the information; the name and location of the UDC chapter; the name and address of the veteran; enlistment information including date and place, regiment, company and commander, and rank when enlisted; principal battles in which the veteran fought, whether he was wounded or taken prisoner and if so, the name of the hospital or details of the imprisonment as well as date of exchange or parole; rank and date when paroled out of service; the name of the veteran's United Confederate Veterans camp and commander, and whether or not the veteran received a Cross of Honor or would like to have one.

The second page of the form asks for the veteran's most interesting or impressive experiences of the war. This page is blank on a majority of the forms. When comments are given, they offer descriptive recountings of battles and attitudes toward the war.

The third and fourth pages of the form include biographical and genealogical information on the veteran, his ancestors and descendants. Names, date and place of birth and death, and war records are given. Questions on the veteran's choice for president and governor in 1860 reveal his politics, as do the questions as to whether he or his father owned slaves. The fourth page includes genealogical information on the veteran's wife's family.

The Miscellaneous series contains seven folders. Materials include lists and copies of rosters and muster rolls which were used as sources in filling out the record forms. There are corresponding record forms in the Record Forms series for most veterans listed in this series.

Folder 300 has record forms for veterans from other states with descendants living in Missouri.

Folder 301 contains letters of Confederate veterans and UDC officers; rosters of United Confederate Veterans camps; a roster of Confederate soldiers buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Springfield; a roster of deceased soldiers--one time residents of Audrain County--with their command and place of burial; a muster roll of a Confederate reunion, Springfield, Missouri, 1901; copy of a muster roll of the Missouri State Guards, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Captain McDowell's Company A; and copies of muster rolls for Rives Regiment, 3rd Missouri Infantry Volunteers from Ray County.

Folders 302-306 contain lists and copies of rosters and muster rolls. Folder 302 has a list of survivors of the first and second Missouri brigades and a list of non-commissioned officers and privates, both copied from Brevier's book.

Folder 303 has a list of Confederate soldiers from Missouri who were killed in battle or died in hospitals during the war. The name and number of their regiments and companies are given. Copies of a roster of Company D commanded by Captain Alexander Day of Perkin's Battalion, Mitchell's Brigade, Parson's Division, Kirby Smith's Army, and a Union order are also in this folder.

Folder 304 has a list of veterans and their wives buried at the Confederate Cemetery, Higginsville; and a list of the service record of members of the Confederate home. Their state of birth is given.

Folder 305 contains lists of Missouri Confederate soldiers who died in Union prisons in Kansas City, and at Camp Montou in Indianapolis, Indiana; and lists of veteran deaths. Copies of selected pages from the UDC Registers' Book offer biographical information on soldiers not mentioned elsewhere in this collection.

Folder 306 contains World War I records of lineal descendants of confederate veterans, collected by the John S. Marmaduke Chapter of the UDC, Missouri Division.

Not all soldier's names are indexed. Researchers should check both series. Many record forms are incomplete, offering only the name of the veteran and his unit, and giving only initials for proper names. A majority of these cite only Bevier's book or Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery records as sources. These names are not indexed. [Lists taken from Brevier's book are in folder 302].

Names from muster rolls, rosters, and lists in folders 300-306 are not indexed as most of these names have corresponding record forms. There is, however, biographical information given on some lists that does not appear on the record forms. Even though many of the forms are incomplete, the collection holds a wealth of information for genealogists as well as for Civil War historians and aficionados.
