INTRODUCTION
The records of Otterville College contain a minute book, catalogs, receipts, and
miscellaneous material.
DONOR INFORMATION
The records were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Thomas P. Hudson on 5 June 1970 (Accession No. 689) and by Mrs. Walter E. Castle on 12 June 1979 (Accession No. 2233).
INSTITUTIONAL SKETCH
In June of 1885, the citizens of
Otterville, Missouri, and vicinity formed the Otterville College Association in order to set about starting a coeducational college
in their town. Otterville College began its first term on September 1 of that year and Jackson V. Curlin, Professor of
Languages, Sciences, and Mathematics, was elected president of the college.
Otterville College operated until 1908 when the Board of Regents was unable to find a suitable individual to run the institution.
The school was dissolved and its property sold at auction.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Otterville
College Records include a hand-written minute book for Board of Regents and stockholder meetings. At the back of the
minute book, there is a list of stockholders, as well as grade reports for 1906. The collection also includes two catalogs and
four receipts.
The miscellaneous material contains a one-page history of the college, a copy of a typed newspaper item regarding
commencement exercises, and several notices for the public sale of the school’s property at auction. The folder also includes
typed minutes for a meeting held on December 14, 1907 in which it was decided to sell the school’s property. These minutes
are not found in the minute book.
