Elijah Slaughter was born in Washington County, Tennessee, on 15 February 1825. He and his family lived in Kentucky from 1835 to 1851, when they moved to Jackson County, Missouri.
Slaughter married Amanda Davenport of Madison County, Kentucky, in 1853. They lived on a farm about 5 miles southwest of Independence, Missouri, and had six children: Orlando, William, Stephen, George, Ida, and Ernest. Slaughter died on 19 September 1902.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Elijah Slaughter journals comprise six volumes kept between 1875 and 1904. There were eight journals originally, but two were lost over time. After Elijah died in 1902, his daughter, Ida, continued to write in the journal for another two years. The journals contain accounts of daily life on the farm and document the bartering of goods and services, weather conditions, recipes, home remedies, groceries bought and farm products sold, and year-end financial statements.
