BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Clarence Melvin Bradley, known simply as Melvin Bradley, was born March 2, 1920 to Charles Madison and Ida Avis Scrivner Bradley in Kaiser, Missouri. He had two sisters and a brother. Growing up, he worked a mule team from the age of 12. In 1942, he became a member of Troop C of the 115th Cavalry in Salem, Oregon and trained with one of the last horse cavalry units of the United States Army. His unit was mechanized that summer, and he was assigned to patrol the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state for a period before completing his military service in San Diego, California. After the defeat of Germany, Bradley married Gloria Brockman June 20, 1945.

For the next seven years, Bradley attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he earned B.S. degrees in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry (1948) and an M.S. in Sheep Production (1952). In 1963 he earned a PhD. from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. In 1968, he became a Professor in Animal Husbandry and an Extension Livestock Specialist. His Extension work would continue for nearly 20 years before his retirement in 1984. He taught at the University of Missouri, in one capacity or another, from 1948 until 1990.

Through work with the Extension Office and the 4-H program, Bradley shared his expertise of horses and mules with people all over the United States and Canada. He assisted farmers with evaluation of feed for maximum nutritional usefulness. He also wrote and edited a series of extension publications about horses, horseback riding, and care of horses. These publications were highly successful, being reprinted and revised for more than 20 years, and even being reproduced for use in Canada. Beginning in 1968 and continuing through the 1980s, Bradley worked with the National 4-H Council to produce lesson materials for local horse clubs. Working with authors from across the United States, Bradley put together a highly successful series of slideshows and workbooks. Statistics from 1982 say that the 4-H horsemanship project distributed 1.5 million publications and 5,000 color slideshow sets across all fifty states.

Bradley occasionally advocated for public policy affecting horses and horse users. From 1975 to 1984, he worked with other volunteers to improve horseback riding opportunities in Rock Bridge State Park, Columbia, Missouri. From 1977 to 1978 he was a member of the first Equus Magazine Editorial Board, contributing commentary on articles and attending an editorial board meeting. In 1978, he joined the American Youth Horse Council, previously the National Horse and Pony Youth Activities Council. In 1982 he joined the US Horse Cavalry Association, and later became a lifetime member. He collected the publications of this organization, and considered quitting when it removed the term “horse” from its title.

He worked in various media as an author, consultant, and editor. In 1981, his textbook, Horses: A Practical and Scientific Approach, was released. As a consultant, Bradley offered advice to various authors, filmmakers, and event planners throughout the United States, including work on various articles, films, the Jack Daniels' Mule Appreciation Day (1984), and exhibitions for the Missouri Draft Horse Association (1981-1985).

Bradley retired March 1, 1985 and became a Professor Emeritus of the University of Missouri-Columbia (UMC). He wrote a 44-page manuscript, “Recollections and Records of 39 Years at the University of Missouri.” This document was later donated to the University Archives. Bradley had a productive period in retirement. In April, 1995, he won Retiree of the Year Award from UMC. Also that year, he and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii, and after a long lobbying effort, spearheaded by the Missouri branch of the American Legion, the mule was appointed Missouri's state animal. He was a longtime supporter of the First Baptist Church, not only contributing financially to that organization, but assisting with building and grounds maintenance as well.

Bradley is best known as an authority on the Missouri mule. This reputation was earned, in part, due to his association with the Missouri Mule History Project, which began in 1981. This project sought to document the history of the Missouri mule. The Missouri Mule Skinners Society, formed in 1982 to raise funds for the project, included approximately 300 members by April, 1983. The project committee was originally headed by Charles C. Campbell, Associate Vice-Provost of the UMC Extension Division. Duane Dailey handled the photographic record, but sometimes conducted interviews as well. Bradley's work on the Missouri Mule History Project included interviews, public speaking, writing, editing, and extensive research. These duties would occupy him from 1981, when the organization was founded, through 1993, when The Missouri Mule: His Origin and Times was published. Eventually, the project raised approximately $35,000 to promote mule research and preserve mule history.

Bradley continued to research and write about mules for many years. He completed three original publications (The Missouri Mule: His Origin and Times, Mules: Missouri's Long-eared Miners, and Recollections of Missouri Mules) and 3 reprinted publications (Photo Record of the Guyton and Harrington Mule Company, a revision of Jack Stock and Mules in Missouri, and a revised reprint of Marsmen in Burma by John Ashton. A traveling exhibit prepared in consort with the UM Cultural Heritage Center, “Alive and Kicking,” was displayed at the National Agricultural Library in Beltsville, Maryland (1988). Bradley promoted mules and the Mule Skinner Society heavily from 1983 through 1988 with numerous public speaking engagements for civic organizations throughout Missouri. By 1999, the Missouri Mule Skinners Society had been disbanded.

C. Melvin Bradley died unexpectedly March 14, 2003 at the age of 83, after undergoing routine surgery. He left two children, David and Susan Bradley, his sister Millie Huddleston, and two granddaughters.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection covers Bradley's work as a livestock specialist in the Cooperative Extensions Office of the University of Missouri from 1968 through the 1990s. Papers document the preparation of lessons, workbooks, and slide shows for the 4-H horse clubs, evaluation of farmers' feed composition, research, teaching, and writing. Vast collected secondary source materials cover all aspects of the Missouri mule industry, horses and mules in war, horse care, horse feeding, uses for mules and horses, horseback riding, and breeding. Notes, correspondence, and audio cassettes from the Missouri Mule History Project (1981-1990) contain extensive personal recollections of mules in Missouri mines, mules in the U.S. Army during World War II, farming with mules, and the mule breeding industry of Missouri during the early part of the 20th century. Collected sources and drafts for books, articles, exhibits, and speeches document Bradley's efforts to publicize the legacy of the mule. Letters, clippings, and photos cover advocacy for making the mule Missouri's official state animal and putting the mule on Missouri's state automobile license plate.

Bradley's research into the history of mules brought him into contact with various other historical researchers with similar interests. As a result, he often received other peoples' research materials as gifts. James H. Cochran gave Bradley several Honorary Mule Skinner Certificates, perhaps a prototype for the Missouri Mule Skinner certificates offered by the Missouri Mule Skinner Society. Along with the certificates, Cochran gave a collection of newspaper clippings that mentioned mules. In 1983, Stan Curtis of the University of Illinois, Animal Science Department, gave Bradley a set of original research notes from Samuel Brody's work in the mid-1940s. Samuel Brody (1890-1956) was a researcher with the Extension Office of the University of Missouri. Photocopies of U.S. Army Veterinary Service records were also collected by Bradley.

The Papers are organized into the following eleven series. The documents in each series are fully described in the folder list.

FOLDER LIST

The Correspondence series contains letters and enclosures. Folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title, though General Correspondence folders come first, with correspondence filed by subject following thereafter. Correspondence collected as source materials for Bradley's research is contained in the Source Materials series.

General Correspondence contains letters sent and received by Bradley concerning his professional research into horses and mules. Several of these letters discuss his advocacy for honoring the mule on license plates and quarter dollars, and making the mule Missouri's state animal. Other topics include the origin of the Missouri Mule History Project, Bradley's public speaking schedule, book orders, anecdotes about mules, and other matters.

Correspondence from a number of veterans associations contain meeting announcements, history of military units during World War II, and purchase orders for Bradley's books. These types of letters come from a number of veterans associations, including the 91st Infantry Division Association, Mars Task Force Mountain Artillery Association, Merrill's Marauders Association, and others. One 1989 letter from John P. Smallwood includes an extensive history of the Salween River Campaign. Several letters by Edward A. “Muleskinner Ed” Wade contain extensive anecdotes of his life working as a mule packer in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II. Sometimes Wade's letters resemble short anecdotal essays, covering not only his experiences with mules, but other life experiences as well. Many letters carry attachments such as articles, clippings, papers, photographs, essays, seasonal greetings, and other documents. An annotated manuscript by Bradley, “Retirement of the Year Award Application,” contains many biographical notes.

The Missouri Mule History Project sub-series contains all manner of materials related to the Missouri Mule Skinners Society, and efforts by Duane Dailey and Bradley to collect, preserve, and publish information on the Missouri mule.

These files contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, press releases, newsletters, promotional materials, and membership certificates, all documenting the formation of the Missouri Mule Skinners Society, its organization, purpose, and accomplishments. Information concerning the donation of the project materials to the State Historical Society of Missouri including files on the dedication ceremony held in 1991 is also contained in this sub-series. See the Missouri Mule History Project (C3954) for more information.

Bradley kept information on project interviewees in his Visits File such as correspondence, photographs, clippings, and notes. Folder 277 contains a unit history for the 612th Field Artillery Battalion, covering World War II. Folder 285 contains a program for a horse show held in Columbia, Missouri, September 30, 1913. Folder 312 contains photocopies of U.S. Army records pertaining to the use of mules in the army, especially the outfitting of mule pack units for use in the Italian Theater in 1943.

The Interview Files contain transcripts of interviews made by Bradley and others for the Missouri Mule History Project from 1982 to 1990, arranged alphabetically by interviewee's last name. Duane Dailey is often listed in the transcripts as a second interviewer, though his comments only appear sporadically. In addition to transcripts of interviews, these files contain interviewers' notes and occasionally include correspondence between Bradley and the interview subject. The interview transcripts here are identical to those included in collection C3954, with the addition of Bradley's highlighting and other notation.

People from throughout Missouri sent letters to Bradley regarding the project. These letters often contained clippings and poems about mules, which he collected for a never realized book of humorous mule stories. Two file folders full of letters containing mule anecdotes are heavily annotated to indicate subjects or where the anecdote may fit into the book.

The Source Materials series contains extensive research materials on mules and horses collected by Bradley over many years. The original filing system consisted of several independent alphabetic sequences containing some materials organized by subject and others organized by title. Other source materials came to Bradley from colleagues in his field. The series is arranged into five sub-series reflecting Bradley's filing system:

The Subject Files sub-series contains a wide array of newspaper clippings, magazines, photocopied portions of monographs, circulars, letters, and other secondary source materials covering subjects related to mules in farming, in Missouri mines, and in the U.S. Army, especially China-Burma-India theater of Word War II, horse nutrition, feed compositions, horses and mules in general, the horse and mule trade in Missouri, wagon trains, Conestoga wagons, and other subjects related to Bradley's research. While most of these materials consist of clippings, photocopies from published sources, pamphlets, and so forth, unusual or exceptional documents are noted here. Folder 478 contains photocopies of correspondence of the Percheron Society of America. Folders 609 through 622 contain notes and letters documenting Bradley's work with the Extension Office to consult horse owners regarding feed composition. Folders 662-671 contain photocopies of official U.S. Army records from the Robinson Quartermaster Depot in Fort Robinson, Nebraska, newsletters of servicemen, and some newspaper clippings about mules in the Army.

The Samuel Brody Papers, sub-series was given to Bradley by Stan Curtis of the University of Illinois, Animal Science Department in 1983. All papers remain in their original file folder groupings, arranged chronologically by the earliest dated material in each folder. Papers not originally filed are described as “un-filed” in the present folder titles. These records consist of original correspondence, laboratory notes, reports, and charts related to the cooperative study of livestock respiration and work capacity conducted by Samuel Brody (1890-1956) and others affiliated with the University of Missouri-Columbia in the mid-1940s.

The Recordings series is divided into three sub-series according to origin of the recordings:

The Missouri Mule History Project Interviews contain 152 audio cassettes of oral history interviews for the Missouri Mule History Project. Interview cassettes are arranged alphabetically by the interviewee's last name. Usually, Melvin Bradley is the interviewer, but Duane Dailey and Sue Engle appear in the transcripts as well. The interview with C.L. "Louie" Van Buren was conducted by Cheryl White. Transcripts and notes from these interviews are found in the Missouri Mule History Project series.

These interviews record the personal recollections of people who had personal experience working with mules in a variety of capacities, including mule pack units in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, mining in Missouri, farm work, teamster work, breeding, and selling. In addition to interviews, there are readings on the Mars Task Force by Willard Bennet "Woody" Woodruff on cassette 151 and by Edward A. Wade on cassettes 131 through 134.

Some of these cassettes are the originals taken into the field. Others were copied from those recorded by Bradley or his associates. Final versions of these cassettes are included in collection C3954, Missouri Mule History Project, Records, 1980-1993 and it is recommended that researchers use the interview cassettes in that collection. The interview with Jay Dillingham concerning the Kansas City stockyards is not included with C3954.
