BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Cornelius Richard Wilhelm Schubert was born 15 January 1814, in Dessau, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1834, landing in Baltimore, and making his way to Belleville, Illinois. His mother and siblings joined him in Belleville in 1838. Cornelius married Louisa C. Bethmann of Hermann, Missouri, on 23 July 1842.
Cornelius, Louisa, and their son Oswald eventually moved to Atchison County, Missouri, as a part of the Sociality colony. The Sociality was an attempt at a collective society. The Schubert family stayed on their land for a number of years, even after the failure of the colony, and had four more children. With the death of their youngest four children in 1859, they decided to rent the farm and move back to Belleville to be closer to relatives.
Upon their return to Belleville, Illinois, Cornelius opened a sign and photography shop. In addition to this shop, Cornelius worked on plays, usually painting the scenery, but also occasionally acting in them. His wife Louisa would design and sew the costumes. Their sixth child, Herman, was born in Belleville in 1861. In 1862 they lost their eldest son Oswald in the Battle of Shiloh. In 1876 the sign and photography shop failed, and the family of three returned to Rock Port in Atchison County. Three months after the move, Cornelius died and the farm was left to his widow and his fifteen year-old son Hermann.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Schubert Family Papers are divided into two series: Family History and Prints. The papers contain genealogical notebooks compiled by Mildred Schubert Breiland, diaries, an account book, prints, drawings, personal papers, broadsides, and typed translations of most of the German language documents (some of these translations are in the genealogical notebooks).
FOLDER LIST
Family History contains the genealogical notebooks covering the Marlatt, Grebe, Schmidt (Smith), and Schubert families of Atchison County. Most families have been traced back to their country of origin. Included in the notebooks are photocopies and translations of marriage and baptism certificates, muster records or casualty sheets, and photocopies and transcriptions of original documents that are held by other descendants. There is one German language volume from an unidentified source that contains a wide variety of recipes. These recipes cover how to remove stains from laundry and how to cook a variety of traditional German foods. There are also recipes for medical ailments that were written in a different handwriting. Further, this volume contains several poems that have not been attributed to a specific poet. Finally, this series contains the personal papers, drawings, and diaries of the Schubert family, as well as an account book for the sign and photography shop, a German Evangelical Luterhan catechism book, and several 19th century illustrated newspapers and magazines.
