INTRODUCTION

The business records of the first hybrid corn company in Missouri include early company histories, scrapbooks, Italian POW labor records, and extensive financial records.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Missouri Hybrid Corn Company Records were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Karen P. Myers on July 3, 1995 (SHS Accession No. 3067).

COMPANY SKETCH

The Missouri Hybrid Corn Company originated on five acres of land in Butler, Missouri. Production began in 1933 but, due to droughts in the mid 1930s, regular production didn't resume until 1937. The company's sales territory included Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee. In the 1960s the company was making shipments to Japan, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Missouri Hybrid Corn Company Records consist of company scrapbooks, research notes, financial records, POW labor records, and additional materials. Folders 75-134 were originally in two large binders.

The records are arranged into four series:

The Missouri Hybrid Corn Company series contains company scrapbooks, board and stockholder meeting notes, research notes, and corn yield data. The Labor series contains contracts and correspondence between the Missouri Hybrid Corn Company and the War Department. In 1944 and 1945 Italian POWs at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, were transported to a facility outside of Columbia, Missouri, for seasonal de-tasseling labor. Plat drawings of this facility are also included.

The Business series is arranged by business name and then by type of record. The records in this series are primarily financial. In addition to the Missouri Hybrid Corn Company records there are financial reports of the Fulton, Missouri, S.R. Yantis Milling Company, which Missouri Hybrid Corn purchased in the 1940s. Papers of the Missouri Seedmen's Association are also included in this series.

The Miscellaneous series contains a 1935 Department of Agriculture publication, which company president Ernest Wagner compiled, and daybooks of Fulton, Missouri, resident Beulah E. White. The daybook entries are short and cover weather conditions, visiting guests, births, deaths and even the occasional bank robbery in a nearby community.
