INTRODUCTION
The papers of the Prewitt Family: Moss Prewitt, his son Robert Thomas and his spouse Sallie Rubey Prewitt consist of business records, correspondence, receipts, and miscellaneous material.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Prewitt Family Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Mrs. Donald Arthur Reid on September 7, 1977 (Accession No. 2126).
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Moss Prewitt was born on March 27, 1799 in Kentucky and moved to Columbia, Missouri in the 1820s. He married Nancy L. Johnson on May 4, 1828 in Columbia and raised 10 children, eight girls and two boys. Mr. Moss Prewitt and Mr. R. B. Price organized the first bank in Columbia, “Prewitt & Price’s Private Bank.” Mr. Prewitt served as treasurer of the Columbia Female Academy, Columbia College, Baptist Female College, City of Columbia, and Boone County. He donated money to the University of Missouri and served on the Board of Curators. Moss Prewitt died at the age of 72 on February 27, 1871.
Robert Thomas Prewitt was born on July 23, 1845, in Columbia. His business association was with J. Sam Moss, who was his partner in a dry goods store, Moss & Prewitt. The store was located on the south side of Broadway between Eighth and Ninth Streets. Mr. Robert Prewitt was also in the business of real estate development, where he would purchase empty lots and develop them for residential or commercial usage. He served as an officer of the First Baptist Church, trustee of Stephens College, and a founder of Columbia’s Y.M.C.A. Robert T. Prewitt married Sallie Rubey on September 7, 1869 and had two daughters. He died at the age of 35 on May 25, 1880.
After the death of her husband, Sallie took over the financial affairs of the family, not only the local dry good store, but also family stock and real estate holdings in Texas and Montana. Sallie died at the age of 62 at her daughter’s home in Montclair, New Jersey while visiting her. Her residence in Columbia at the time was 1301 East Broadway.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The papers contain documents of the Prewitt family’s business transactions such as tax and savings receipts, deeds, promissory notes, and ledgers. Furthermore, the general correspondence included outlines the state of the Prewitt family’s business affairs as well as information on Moss & Prewitt.
Other miscellaneous documents included in the papers are: newsletters from the Young Ladies of Adelphia, an organization from Mt. Pleasant College, Huntsville, Missouri, a Supreme Court summons for Samuel and Harriet Comstock against Edward and Sophia Hickcox, of Oneida County; a deed between John A. Hull and W. G. Rubey, estate papers for Milton S. Matthews and Mary S. Parker; and a warranty deed for James A. and Ross Parker.
