Bedford Family, Papers, 1849-1870, 1940s (C2610)
.2 linear feet
INTRODUCTION
Correspondence of the Bedford Family of Andrews County, Missouri, Southern sympathizers during the Civil War.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Bedford Family Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Mrs. Redmond Cole on 18 November 1968 (SHS Accession No. 582).
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Bedford family papers consist of correspondence, a diary, and a few miscellaneous items arranged in chronological order. Early letters include those from Thomas Bedford of Benicia, California, describing the gold rush, travel, and life in California.
There is much mention of abolitionist agitation in pre-Civil War days and descriptions of prejudice against the North. Many of the letters and the diary were written by A.M. Bedford, from the Officer's Prison at Johnson's Island on the Ohio River, describing life as a prisoner of war. There are also letters of civilian life from his wife. Later letters describe Reconstruction life.
Folder 19 contains the envelopes in which the collection was donated. The letters were organized during World War II and the envelopes are from that period.
