INTRODUCTION

Elsa Nagel’s 1971 English translation of Gert Goebel’s Länger Als Ein Menschenleben in Missouri for the State Historical Society of Missouri. The manuscript details Goebel’s impressions and experiences while living in Franklin County, Missouri, and includes extensive information on German settlement and early Missouri history.

The Nagel translation was transferred to Western Historical Manuscript Collection from the State Historical Society of Missouri in January 1983 (SHS Accession No. 2460). It is part of the German Heritage Archives.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Gert Goebel was born in Coburg, Germany, on April 1, 1816, to David and Henrietta Goebel. The family immigrated to the United States in 1834 and settled on a farm near Newport, Franklin County, Missouri. In 1842 he married Caroline Becker and they had ten children, three of whom died in infancy. During his lifetime, he served as public surveyor, chief clerk for the state register office, and state senator. He died in 1896.

Elsa Nagel was born on February 25, 1896, in West, Texas. She received her B.S. in Education from the State Teachers College, Kirksville, Missouri, in 1922 and her M.A. in Modern European History from the University of Missouri in 1926. She joined the staff of the University of Missouri as a German instructor and remained until her retirement as Professor Emeritus of German in 1966. She died on September 14, 1973.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The translation of Longer then a Lifetime in Missouri was completed in 1971 by Elsa Nagel and consists of an introduction, preface, and thirty-three chapters on a variety of topics, including the Giessener Emigration Society, Germans immigration to Missouri, Franklin County, farming, grape culture, Civil War, and the early political history of the state.

The collection contains one handwritten copy, one typescript copy, and two carbon copies completed by Nagel in 1971.
