INTRODUCTION

The records of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Mid-Missouri Chapter, consist of case files, correspondence, and meeting minutes.

DONOR INFORMATION

The ACLU, Mid-Missouri Chapter Records were donated to the University of Missouri by Harris Cooper, former president of the Mid-Missouri Chapter, on February 16, 1983 (Accession No. 4488).

ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

The American Civil Liberties Union was founded in 1920 by Roger Baldwin, Crystal Eastman, Albert De Silver and a number of other individuals. It is now an organization of nearly 300,000 members and supporters with offices in almost every state. The ACLU’s main mission is to fight civil liberties violations, whenever or wherever they occur. It is active in our national and state capitals and is supported by annual dues and contributions from its members, as well as grants from private foundations and individuals. The ACLU also works to extend rights to those segments of the population that traditionally have been denied their rights. The Mid-Missouri Chapter was a subdivision of the Eastern division of the ACLU in St. Louis.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The ACLU, Mid-Missouri Chapter Records consist of case files, correspondence, and meeting minutes. The material primarily documents the issues and types of cases the organization was involved in. The records also nicely illustrate the workings of the organization. The records are arranged into three series:

The Case Studies series comprises correspondence dealing with specific individuals, subjects, or topics involving various forms of possible civil rights violations. Some newspaper clippings are also included. The case studies are arranged alphabetically by the subject or the last name of the individual.

The Correspondence series consists of letters from potential clients; to the Centralia, Missouri, School District Board of Education; and to law offices and individual lawyers. There is a public service letter to the Boone County Circuit Court, letters from the Executive Director of the ACLU, an ACLU membership and recruitment flyer, a draft of a letter to then-President Jimmy Carter by the chairman of the Mid-Missouri chapter, a press statement, an ACLU membership drive flyer, “letters-to-the-editor,” and articles criticizing the ACLU. This material is arranged chronologically.

The Meeting Minutes series consists of ACLU board meeting agendas, topics of discussion, statements and various announcements. There is also a copy of the revised by-laws, amendments to the by-laws, an intake interview guide, a statement about the Bill of Rights from the United States Constitution and how it relates to the ACLU, a copy of the Constitution of the American Civil Liberties Union, a listing of ACLU affiliates, and a listing of ACLU Board of Directors. This series is arranged chronologically.
