BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
After the War of 1812, Charles S. Clarkson of Kentucky was appointed assistant district paymaster for the U.S. Army in southern Ohio. Clarkson married Charlotte A.R. Dunlop of Ohio and their children included James D., John M., Catherine “Kate” D., David, Josephine L., and Margaret. At various times, the family lived in Cincinnati, St. Louis, Kentucky, and Mississippi. Around 1848, Charles S. Clarkson was promoted to colonel.
Charlotte A.R. Dunlop Clarkson was the daughter of Andrew Dunlop and Sarah Bella Chambers. Other children of the Dunlops were J. Catherine, James, and Josephine. J. Catherine Dunlop married Colonel Casper Wever of Weverton, Indiana.
Josephine Dunlop married her cousin, James Chambers Ludlow, and their children included Charlotte Chambers, Catherine “Kate,” and Sarah Bella Dunlop. In 1846, Sarah Bella Dunlop Ludlow married Salmon Portland Chase, an Ohio politician who eventually became Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Clarkson Family Papers consists mainly of correspondence. Colonel Charles S. Clarkson often travelled away from home, and much of the correspondence is between him and his family. A great deal of the correspondence discusses various family and friends, as well as life at home. Several letters have been started by one of the Clarkson children and then finished by their mother. A number of the letters were written by family friends, as well as extended family members, including Colonel Clarkson's brother and Charlotte Clarkson's mother and sisters. Other correspondence in the collection relates to Colonel Clarkson's business matters.
The bulk of the correspondence dates from 1849, and a number of these letters deal with the death of Kate Clarkson from cholera, as well as touch on the wider epidemic sweeping the country. In one letter from January 1848, David Clarkson writes a detailed account to his father of a school prank that resulted in his expulsion from college and other letters from the time period concern a failed attempt by Charlotte to sell some hogs.
