INTRODUCTION

The papers of a Rocheport, Missouri woman consist of appointments, certificates, correspondence, invitations, programs, and dance cards. Mitchell, a graduate of Stephens College, was involved in many civic and women’s organizations, including the Missouri Women Farmers’ Club.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Frances Pearle Mitchell Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Pearle Mitchell on an unknown date. An addition to the collection was made on 1 October 2003 (Accession No. 6010).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Born around 1864, Frances Pearle Mitchell, who went by her middle name, attended Stephens College from 1877 to 1880. She lived in Rocheport, Missouri, and participated in a variety of civic and women’s organizations throughout her life, including acting as president of the Missouri Women Farmers’ Club.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Frances Pearle Mitchell Papers are arranged alphabetically and consist of certificates, commissions, correspondence, dance cards, invitations, programs, and miscellaneous ephemera.

The certificates include memberships to organizations such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Missouri Division, John S. Marmaduke Chapter and the National Geographic Society, as well as a certificate issued by the U.S. legation at Tokyo, Japan, requesting Mitchell’s safe and free passage and protection. The certificate gives Mitchell’s age and physical description.

The collection also includes appointments and commissions from three Missouri governors for events around the country.

The correspondence in this collection deals exclusively with Mitchell’s involvement in a variety of civic and women’s organizations, including the Missouri Women Farmers’ Club and the National American Woman Suffrage Association.

The collection also contains invitations to a variety of social events, along with programs and dance cards from balls. In 1902, Mitchell was invited to the White House on four occasions by President and Mrs. Roosevelt.
