the American Revolution lecture, APioneering in Missouri,@ 1916. The scrapbook also includes a copy of the lecture, written by Ethel Massie
Withers, with explanations of the photographs. The lantern slides are located in the Editorial Department of the State Historical Society of Missouri.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Withers scrapbook was donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Ethel Massie Withers, c. 1917.
BACKGROUND
The lantern slide lecture Pioneering in Missouri was sponsored by the Missouri Daughters of the American Revolution. Its purpose was
to arouse a greater interest in Missouri history. Ethel Massie Withers was the State Historian of the Missouri DAR when she wrote the lecture and gathered the slides to illustrate it. Local chapters of the DAR financially assisted the creation of the lecture.
The lecture and its 175 lantern slides were deposited with the State Historical Society of Missouri which could then loan it to clubs, schools, and public gatherings for the cost of postage and any loss due to breakage. The lantern slides are located in the Editorial Department of the State Historical Society of Missouri.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Ethel Massie Withers Scrapbook consists of a copy of the lecture Pioneering in Missouri and 210 photographs. The photographs have been removed from the scrapbook for conservation purposes and are arranged in the order that they appeared in the lecture. Six photographs are missing: #87, 109-111, 141 and 142. At the end of the scrapbook were photographs that were not part of the lecture although they relate to the theme of pioneering in Missouri.
The photographs depict historic sites in the earliest settlements and along the primary settlement trails of the state. There are also pictures of various DAR groups at the dedication of markers commemorating historic sites throughout the state.
At the beginning of the lecture is a list describing the photographs used in the lecture. A copy of the list follows this inventory.
