INTRODUCTION

The William W. Elwang Papers consist of a scrapbook and the papers of a Presbyterian minister who was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, Missouri.

DONOR INFORMATION

The Elwang Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Minnie Koken Elwang in February 1945 (no accession number).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

William Wilson Elwang was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on 16 November 1865. He received his B.A. at Southwestern University in Tennessee and received his divinity degree at Columbia Theological Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina. He became pastor of a Presbyterian church in New Orleans and later was called to Orlando, Florida. He was a chaplain during the Spanish American War.

In 1899 Elwang was called to the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, Missouri, where he served until 1920. While in Columbia he pursued an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Missouri and was also active in Presbytery and Synod of Missouri activities. When he left the First Presbyterian Church Elwang became a teacher. He taught English in the Philippines and China and returned to Columbia in 1926.

Elwang married Margaret Hersman in 1891 and they had one daughter Abbe Wanda. Margaret Elwang died in 1907 and in 1920 he married Minnie Koken Newman. Elwang died on 28 November 1938.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Elwang Papers consist of a scrapbook and papers that document the life of a Presbyterian minister. The scrapbook consists of newsclippings pertaining to the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. The clippings cover both events of specific churches as well as the Presbyterian Church’s stand on the issues of the day.

The papers include items from the Orlando and Columbia churches of which Elwang was pastor. These include invitations to church functions, programs, and some of Elwang’s writings as a minister. There are also book reviews written by Elwang and a few photos of Elwang both at family outings and official gatherings.
